I have a theory that maybe Sunny told Kai his true name willingly in order to prevent Mordret from doing it.

well what i think that your theory is partially correct, cassie told sunny when they saw wind flower saint for the first time that guiding light staff pointed to those whose, true names they knew so it pointed to effie and not devouring beast this meant defilement or corruption changes the true name, similar case can also be seen for kai when he killed dread lord, the spell didn't announce his name as nightangle but hideous ruler of empty sky, so same thing could also have happend to sunny when he became mad prince, nephis didn't knew his corrupted true name so he got free from her bond and killed her, as for dread lord maybe after he killed nephis, dread lord used his ability to order sunny to stay still and asked his true name, since kai knew that sunny's true name can make him vulnerable, so he used it against him that's how he made mad prince his slave while mordret couldn't

Seems more likely he lost his true name after becoming Defiled so only Dread Lord couldve commanded him using his aspect. I think...

You know, I felt that Sunny was over the board with his pettiness when he kill stole the Spire Messenger, but compared to how hard he had to bust his back during this fight, what powers he gained to even be able to simply live long enough to fight in the first place, how much strain it took him to get where he is now, him now receiving shit by the end of it fells much worse. Also in the perspective of Nephis' "Oh, I am so shackled, here's a nuke for you" effortlessly... My boy Sunny being scammed by the author.

Are you forgetting that Nephis was affected by the time loop. And Sunny wasn't. Sunny literally got given the Main Character exception rule with that one while Nephis was like an NPC forgetting the time loops

Which time loop? The big one or the whirlpool one? If it's the whirlpool one, then maybe he was treated like the main character for once - since even though it was implied everyone will eventually remember the previous cycles, he did it first and I don't think there was much of a reason for that?

And still, I don't know how this relates to the conversation, because I don't think he gained much of direct powerup in the whirlpool loop, since he used his knowledge to safe his companions, and on top of that - he had to fight tooth and nail for those advantages, while Nephis just... gets them?

I completely agree, the battle in the Twilight sent our boy to hell. Everyone abandoned him, Kai broke the giant, almost gave the kill to Mordret, and then stole the kill himself, though he barely lifted a finger. and Neph again used her power over the Slave, and with the help of the god from the machine she rose up. The author repeatedly stupidly underestimates Sunny, completely removed the Soul Serpent from the plot, and gave him a semi-useless crown.

"Nothing more pathetic than a slave trusting their slaver"
In other circumstances it might have been wrong but in his case you can't overestimate the importance of this phrase.
In actual slave-slaver relation (without magic) slave has atleast a hint of autonomy he can commit mutiny despite being rewarded with pain or death. But in his case there is no other option, its absolute, he can't choose pain or death over obedience and that's why its different, that's why it matters more than ever
