          Those bugs are not even alive. I doubt soul damage applies to them. Anything with soul cannot be transported via Sunny's shadow step at the moment, yet the bugs did. The question is: who and how controls them then? They clearly can emit true darkness and control it. Such things are impossible to do without essence, therefore impossible to do without at least some rudimentary analogue of soul. The true darkness control could be, like Sunny has thought, a remnant of original evolving creature, not bugs' ability.
