The cohort had dealt a terrible blow to the small part of it, but hundreds upon hundreds of flying ships still remained, carrying thousands upon thousands of soldiers.     is it that he lied about hope being able to free herself if only 2 chains are left i dont get it
    and if thats true then how can immortals be alive in the future (this is hinted at since there are still knifes)

      first point - there were a division of the forces already in the city but the rest had to fly over from god knows where, and therefore were late to the fight.
      (aka, there were 50 ships - but then reinforcements arrived-)

      second point - i'm not a psychologist, but it may have been because: 1. noctis was going mad from the burden of time 2. perhaps he has seen what someone gnawing off their own limb to get out is like and doesn't wish it on hope 3. he's simply been alive too long.
