      Well... he is sort of uneducated, living outskirt gave him different knowledge. In his first nightmare, he was smart because he uses his outskirt life knowledge (Poison, untrust people, deadly people etc). Considering the world time is probably century from now, knowledge about boat and stuff is possibly rare.
