Chapter 2983: Full Circle

"It's over. There is no point in struggling anymore, Song of the Fallen. Won't it be easier to simply give up?"

Asterion's words echoed in the dark expanse of the empty hall, reflecting from the walls that contained the forbidden truths Nether, the Demon of Destiny, had carved.

Cassie raised a trembling hand, the sharp tip of her dagger pointed at her enemy. She knew where the Dreamspawn was because he had spoken, allowing her to aim her weapon at the source of the calm, chilling voice.

Otherwise, all Cassie could perceive was darkness.

Her body was battered and bruised, and her face was bloodied. She was covered in countless cuts... she was exhausted. Fatigue was pressing her down to the ground, and her mind was aflame with the terrible, pulsing pain that nestled somewhere in the depths of her empty eye socket.

And there seemed to be no hope left.

The Longing Domain was lost. The Mirror Domain was lost, as well. Her only option was to run, but there was nowhere to run anymore. Her back was against the wall.

It was all going to end here, in this dark hall, with only the forbidden runes littering its walls left to witness her defeat.

So... maybe Asterion was right. Maybe it would indeed be easier to give up.

But against all reason, Cassie held her dagger up and prepared for one last, hopeless act of resistance.

Her voice sounded grim and steady:

“What to do? Struggling is the point."

Such was life. Life was a desire... it was a desire to be alive, and since the world always strived to end it, life was a constant struggle.

It was war.

Asterion chuckled.

This time, when his voice resounded in the darkness, it sounded closer.

“As you wish..."

He prepared to subdue her, while she prepared to defend herself.

But then...

Something changed.

Something changed about the world.

It was as if a gust of ethereal wind blew across the dark hall, and suddenly, something imperceptible was different about it.

About everything.

Cassie froze.

Asterion seemed to have felt it, too. He looked around, frowning, and then asked in a somber tone:

"What was that? What did you do?"

But Cassie did not answer. She couldn't answer, because at that moment, she felt that countless new memories suddenly poured into her mind.

No... not quite. It was as if they had always been there, but she was not aware of them — until now. Most people would not have known it immediately, but she was sensitive to memories. She knew immediately when her own were changed.

'What...'

A torrent of familiar sounds, scents, and sensations flooded her mind.

The hum of voices in the auditorium of the Awakened Academy... and a silent presence by her side.

The feeling of the golden rope tied around her waist going slack.

A young man's voice resounding quietly in the darkness, asking why anyone would bother keeping her alive.

That voice...

Cassie swayed.

Sunny... it was Sunny. The Lord of Shadows. It was Lost from Light.

How could she have forgotten?

As if summoned by his True Name, the memories filled the empty vastness of her fragmented mind, making it whole again. The Forgotten Shore, where he had cared about her like an older brother... and all that followed. The torment of having to abandon one of her friends in order to save another. The agony of having chosen wrong — of being wrong to have chosen.

And then, all those years of watching quietly, preparing, and planning. Pushing and pulling to see how the currents of fate changed, but remained the same...

Until fate was broken.

The Chained Isles, the suffocating cage in the Night Temple, the splendor of its past tranquility in the Kingdom of Hope, the radiant days spent in the Sanctuary of Noctis, the battle for the Ivory Tower.

The cold dread of Antarctica, the incinerating terror of the Nightmare Desert, the endless expanse of the Great River... the Tomb of Ariel. The final resting place of the Demon of Oblivion.

Where their memories of Sunny had been buried.

Those memories were unearthed now.

‘It was... the...'

From the Forgotten Shore to Godgrave, and beyond... they had always been walking side by side — sometimes willingly, sometimes against their will.

But it was them.

It was Cassie and Sunny... they had broken fate.

Sunny was the blade that cut it, and Cassie was the hand that had aimed the blade.

“What did you do?!"

Cassie shifted slightly, turning in the direction of Asterion's bark.

He must have known of Sunny's existence once, as well. And now, the man who built his kingdom by manipulating human minds was confronting the truth that his own mind had been tampered with, as well.

Cassie opened her mouth, intending to say something — anything. But no words came. She was too overwhelmed by the magnitude of the revelation... and by the emotional charge it delivered, blasting open all the doors she had built in her mind.

Tears streamed from her remaining eye, mixing with blood covering her face.

...It was then that the Spell whispered in her ear, making Cassie flinch.

Its voice sounded pleased.

Triumphant, even.

The Spell whispered:

[You have performed an act of defiance.]

[You have defied fate.]

[The fifth seal has been broken.]

Cassie's eye widened, but before she could process the proclamation of the Nightmare Spell, the vaguely familiar voice spoke again.

[You have received an Aspect Legacy.]

[Song of the Fallen! Prepare to receive the bequeathment...]

‘An Aspect Legacy? What...'

Just then, the Nightmare Spell presented her a boon — one worthy of her Aspect.

A harrowing boon that Cassie was not prepared to receive.

Her Aspect Legacy...

It was memories.

It was a boundless chronicle of memories that belonged to different people, different beings, both great and small. A chronicle of the world as it had been witnessed by those who populated its vast and terrifying expanse across countless eons — from the dawns of time in the Age of God... to today.

To what was happening right now, somewhere else.

And if Cassie had thought that her own memories flooding back were too overwhelming...

Then this calamitous boon was simply devastating.

It was a burden that no human mind — not even a Transcendent mind — could endure. Only the mind of a Supreme demigod could. Cassie wanted to scream, but found herself paralyzed.

She wanted to close her mind to the obliterating torrent of memories, but couldn't.

And so...

Her mind shattered.

That was the last thing Cassie remembered before finding herself in the ocean of broken memories. Before attempting to assemble herself back together from the countless shards.

‘Right.'

That was how it had happened.

That was how she had been broken. Drifting in the ocean of memories, Cassie finally knew who she was, how she had ended up in this state...

And what she had to do.

The tendrils of her Will plunged into the vast maelstrom of memory shards, drinking them all in.

Assembling her into a creature that could endure the burden of her Aspect... of her Domain.

Making her Supreme.

If you are going at a super fast time frame, everything would look frozen to you... Time is a law that cannot be defied, it was also stated that the gods and daemons fell to time. I don't know, but the thought of a Daemon being able to stop time throughout the realms whenever someone steps into his tomb is absurd... TOA is just isolated from the rest of the world and time flows much faster in there just like how it flows faster when those born in the great river try to move up stream... They age quickly and die

I remember that many chapters ago, when the concept of the Act of Defiance was introduced, someone theorized that all of Cassie's schemes clearly fit the concept of the Act of Defiance, and who would have thought that several chapters later it would prove true.

I can’t find the comment but somebody said something about the nightmare spell not making her go through the fourth nightmare but that she hadn’t quite naturally ascended. I disagree with that assessment, for many reasons. First, the nightmare spell was very possibly just narrating the changes in her soul. It said the fifth seal had been removed, not that the spell removed it. That’s not really a convincing argument on its own, but we don’t know that Nephis didn’t get the same message following her rise to supremacy. That, and the nightmare spell either can’t or won’t make changes that the soul cannot accommodate. At least, it’s too callous to “give” them the advancement; the entire purpose of the system is to cultivate fate defying powerhouses that will become stronger than the system, not beings that rely on the system for their strength and advancement. At most, the spell would’ve helped facilitate her advancement as it normally does, but it would’ve only made sure nothing went wrong. Getting to that point is an achievement of Cassie herself, the spell does not give out charity. If she attained supremacy, it was not because the spell arbitrarily decided she didn’t need the fourth nightmare.

Separately, there was another comment that brought the parallels between Cassie and Weaver, how they’re both missing an eye. Paired with the spell sounding “pleased” here, I really think that her and Sunny will be the successors of Weaver together, to bear the weight and power of the ancient daemon. For clarity, that’s hardly news, but the missing eye parallel was a really neat touch

This last bit is mostly unsubstantiated, but I really wonder what the “system” the spell operates on and what these traces of personality suggest. I don’t know if it makes sense, but I don’t really think the gods are dead, per se. Maybe just reduced existence robbed of their sentience and agency, with Weaver being the only barely sentient agent, either being an intentionally robotic observer for the sake of impartially allowing his subjects to rise to power or this robotic tone being a side effect of the vastness and weight of his existence. I’m inclined to say it’s a mix of the two, but it definitely has a definitive personality. It’s proud of Cassie (or at least pleased with her) as his spiritual successor but always calls Sunny treacherous, which could be a result of beef or bias Weaver has against the Shadow god. The only other thing that slightly gives credence to this general theory is the fact that Sunny and the divine lineages exist. The Shadow god blessed him from beyond the grave. The gods obviously don’t abide by common sense, so any real logic applied to them is likely futile, but if they are part of the system and these blessings are essentially them stirring in their sleep, it would really fall in line with how G3 foreshadows. There are things discussed within the first 15 chapters that were relevant over 2000 chapters later, so that original inclusion of the shadow god stirring after death would actually make more sense being a bread crumb.

That concludes my many loose thoughts, happy to hear what y’all think. Cheers 0-o

Perhaps when the gods died and were used to create the nightmare spell, their minds may have been preserved. I understand the parallel with Cassie and Weaver, and there's always talk about how Cassie could be one of Weaver's successors, but I think we should also consider that it was probably part of Weaver's plans. Let's face it, a boy with a Fated Fate and an extremely powerful seer—one has an Aspect that enslaves him; he can only achieve freedom if his Fate is taken from him, and doing so would break the Fate. The other is someone who has seen too much of the future, she even knows when her parents will die and where they will be buried. That's the Fate, that's how it's written. The only way she can change that is if the Fate ceases to be part of the equation, but she's not important enough; she wasn't weak or strong enough. And so these two end up meeting. The Fate of the world is to be destroyed by the forgotten Gods. I don't know what kind of love Weaver has for existence to care so much that even after... The dead man continues his plans to save all of it from destruction. The parallels between Cassie and Weaver are great. If I were to classify them, Sunny would be his blood heir and his artisan disciple (weapons, armor, artifacts, and the spell itself; if he becomes strong enough, he can also become a seer, just by using "Where is my eye?"). And then there's Cassie, who often acts like Weaver; she's practically the heir to his desire to destroy Fate (even if they may have different motivations for it). She's a seer like him, but despite Cassie being a GOAT, she probably follows a good part of a plan already foreseen by Weaver; perhaps Weaver even has a hand in these coincidences.

I agree, to an extent. I think the spell’s fate is only a facet of the larger universal fate; Sunny still experienced super unlikely and fantastical events even disconnected from the spell. I don’t really know how to explain or define it, but I think the fate of the Spell is just Weavers intention for fate, if that makes sense? This isn’t really a comprehensive theory; the people without the spell forgot Sunny all the same (cough, Rain, cough). I don’t claim to understand how it works or why, but I'm damn sure this goes deeper than what’s been explicitly mentioned. Whatever the case, Weaver definitely knows the truth of the matter and has almost definitely orchestrated a significant amount of what has happened current day

The first one is mine. I was very confused at the first moment of reading and wrote nonsense. I still have questions about this point, but I'll wait a few more chapters before writing about it.

I like to think that the seven gods did not have a permanent personality. Gods are a set of laws, will, essence and matter that makes up the world. When you become a god, you have a choice: continue to grow, gain strength and eventually become one of the mortal worlds or keep your humanity. The seven gods chose the first path and went very far, because of which they lost the ability to balance between being a being and being a thing, law and so on. So they divided themselves into two entities. One main one, which is called a god, and the second secondary one - the avatar. The avatar must maintain the humanity of a god, so he is born weak, grows up and can die. This is similar to Aang and Korra, if you know. And now about the Spell. I think it's a Frankenstein monster, created from parts of gods and demons, and controlled by the Weaver's altered mind (obvious reason) or Oblivion (because the Spell artifacts are called Memory, and also because the Weaver used 12 constellations to create the Spell, not 13). So Shadow God, or Shadow Gods part did it on its own, without Spell.

Nah I totally get it, especially when we’ve never seen the spell transition somebody into supremacy. Weirdly we saw quasi-sacred-dom with Mordret before the work addressing supremacy. I could be wrong, too, just what I pieced together how I understood it. I would’ve replied directly but I can only ever see the most recent page of comments since I use safari and I couldn’t be bothered to change browsers lol

That interpretation of the gods is interesting. I have some minor qualms about it due to the unique nature of their conception, but it largely makes sense. I do love the way you described the spell as being a Frankenstein product, that’s good stuff

Nah think of the spell as an AI system meant to help people ascend quickly, weaver used himself as the initial catalyst to launch and host it on a local machine and then used the death of the gods and daemons to Push the spell into the cloud making it global... Sunny created his own mini spell... The handy bracelet.

Using the spell, it is possible to go from human to divine within a year, but it's the fear of death that keep people from speed running their ascension 😂

So I reckon this is how her abilities evolved now she's Supreme.

Before, she could only use her Transformation ability to alter memories if someone looked her in the eyes. Now I reckon it can be extended through her ascended ability through her marks. Meaning that anyone who is her mark, which would be part of her domain, could have their memories altered by Cassie. She could perhaps mark NCs as well; I can't remember if she's always capable of doing that, but it would be cool to see if she could.

Furthermore, I believe that the boons granted to those of her domain are that they can also see into the future for a few seconds via her awakened ability. Or that Cassie can now see a few moments into the future through her marks instead of only being limited to herself. Her awakened ability to see a few moments of the future would be stronger. Perhaps a minute or two ahead instead of a few moments. This will greatly increase humanity's battle power. Knowing when and where the danger is coming from will save countless lives.

Now I am not too sure about her ability to see people's runes. Maybe it will allow her to understand humanity's strengths and weaknesses, so she could organise everyone into positions that will fully play into their full potential.

Also one last thing, Cassie could make everyone forget that Mordret was a bad guy and won't make it look strange if he's now on our side. IF, Mordret comes to our side

For those still thinking that time freezes when you enter the Tomb of Ariel... the answer is it doesn't. Time flows faster inside the tomb of Ariel, think of it like this, a year inside is equivalent to a day outside... That was why Anvil and Ki Song were already in Antarctica when they they returned from the Great River. The world outside the Tomb of Ariel is still active, but they are moving at a much much slower timeframe/ speed or whatever... You can picture it well if you think of flash using his superspeed on the streets... The people around him look as if they are frozen, but they aren't... They are just moving very very slowly.

Chapter 2925 literally explained around 60 chapters ago
Nephis was watching the flames, a distant look on her face.

      "It's so strange."

      Sunny raised an eyebrow.

      “What is?"

She lingered for a moment, then said hesitantly:

“The time... being separated from time by the walls of the Tomb of Ariel."

      Nephis frowned slightly.

“Back then, I spent a long time in the Nightmare. But when the Nightmare was over, not even a second had passed in the real world. We emerged from it as soon as we entered... that is because time in the Tomb of Ariel works differently than anywhere else, and its connection to the world beyond is unique."
      She shook her head.
"Now that the Greater River stands still, I thought that things would be different. But they're not. From our perspective, time in the world outside is frozen, and only flows here."

Sunny had gathered that much, but he still wanted to ask:

      “How do you know?"

      Nephis pointed to the flame.

“I am still connected to the few people who are left in my Domain. I can feel the flames of their longing. However, those flames don't dance anymore... they are static, unmoving. Like beautiful statues made from radiant ice."

They just entered the piramid when at this moment when Asterion was ab to catch Cassie.
      It was stopped here.
And now it follows again, meaning they left the piramid, this can be seen bc Cassie found out ab everything ab Sunny.
So even if technically we just saw them ab to leave they are already out.
Next time we see them might be when they come back.

All dis event are happening side by side... Else when Daeron, Anake and the other made their way to TOA, the outside world should have been frozen, then their realm wouldn't have lost.
