Chapter 2980: Good Old Runes

Still lying on the cold stones, Sunny stared into the boundless darkness above them. There, high above the ground, the fabric of the world was torn, and the fissure he and the Vile Thieving Bird had arrived through could still be seen.

He could not enter the heart of the Estuary without Nephis, and was not sure that there was a point in trying to get inside either. So, it was all but certain that he would have to enter the labyrinth of broken time once more in order to return to his companions. It was just that...

That labyrinth was infinite in a very literal sense. It was a maze of eternity.

Sunny did not want to find out how long one could remain lost in eternity.

Delving into the fissure without some sort of guidance was no different from suicide. He closed his eyes.

'Fine... I'll just rest a little bit. Then I will think of a way forward, or at least of a way to find the way forward.'

He remained motionless for a short while, then sighed and opened his eyes again. His body needed time to heal enough for him to move freely, so he had to wait a little bit longer.

In the meantime, Sunny summoned his runes to occupy himself.

They shimmered into existence, and their familiar glow made Sunny experience a peculiar feeling. It was subdued, but also deep and intense, making him take a shaky breath.

He had tried to emulate these runes as best he could with the Handy Bracelet, but...

‘Nothing beats the real thing.'

Sunny inhaled deeply and looked at his runes — the real runes, as opposed to the close approximation he had been able to create himself.

Name: Sunless.

True Name: Lost from Light.

He had to stop right there.

Just reading those three words, Lost from Light, made the intense feeling of seeing the Spell's runes again seem mild and insignificant.

‘It's me... I'm me again.'

He gritted his teeth.

After all these years...

It took Sunny a good minute to compose himself and continue reading.

Rank: Supreme.

Class: Titan.

Shadow Cores: [7/7].

Shadow Fragments: [7000/7000].

Memories: [Silver Bell], [Extraordinary Rock], [Endless Spring], [Weaver's Mask], [Shadow Lantern], [Weaver's Needle], [Nebulous Mantle].

He paused for a moment, looking at the pitifully short list of the Memories he still possessed.

That damn bird... it had really cleaned him out.

Sunny sighed heavily.

‘Damnation.'

The Vile Thieving Bird even stole the Memory he had received for killing it. The audacity!

He glanced at the shimmering runes with a dark expression.

‘...At least I still have the Rock.’

So if he wanted to talk to someone, there was always a great conversation partner waiting for him within his soul.

Sunny smiled faintly, shook his head, and glanced back at the runes.

They read:

Echoes: —

Shadows: [Jade Saint], [Soul Serpent], [Nightmare], [Shadow Fiend], [Marvelous Mimic], [—], [Vile].

Sunny's gaze lingered on the end of the list. Slayer did not get to be named by the Nightmare Spell. She did not even get to be called -unknown-, as if the Spell denied her the right to possess a name — any name, not only the name of Orphne of the Nine. It was a little peculiar, but...

Orphne had killed Weaver, after all.

She had killed Weaver twice.

So, in a sense, the Spell had been born from her blade.

It didn't really make sense that the Spell refused to acknowledge her, but Sunny was in no mood to ponder its attitude.

The Vile Spawn was simply called Vile. It was as good a name as any for that loathsome thing, so Sunny just took it in stride.

There was a lot about his Shadows Sunny wanted to study in detail — he had been filling in the blanks himself after losing the Nightmare Spell, after all. Even with Cassie's help, the descriptions could not approach the level of insight the Spell possessed.

But there would be time for that later, when he was reunited with Nephis and Asterion was not devouring humanity anymore. For now, there was only one important detail that had Sunny's attention.

Most of his Shadows were Supreme by now, and the Spell... the Spell did not offer streamlined ways of elevating them to an even higher Rank anymore. Perhaps creating deities was beyond even its ability, or possibly it was simply rationing its resources — conjuring one Fifth Nightmare and nurturing one Sacred being had to cost it more than millions of Awakened, after all. In any case, it did not seem possible to push any of his Shadows past the Supreme Rank and Apotheosis... at least for now. With the exception of Serpent — if Sunny truly mastered the sixth step of Shadow Dance, Serpent was bound to become Sacred.

And speaking of Shadow Dance...

Sunny's eyes jumped to the corresponding string of runes, and he ground his teeth once more.

‘That damn...'

He was already tired of cursing the Thieving Bird.

Apparently, he had not mastered the sixth step just yet. However, he had mastered the fifth... and the Legacy Relic he was supposed to receive was missing!

The runes describing it said that it had been claimed, and there was no trace of it anywhere. The loathsome bird took it with the rest of the treasures it had stolen. Suddenly, Sunny was glad not to have mastered the Sixth Step yet.

He looked at Vile, then cursed under his breath.

‘If I ever catch that damn thief...'

He distracted himself by turning his focus back to the runes.

The runes read:

Domain: [Shadow].

Shadow Domain Subjects: [Dark Dancer], [Promise of a Distant Sky], [Aiko], [Kim], [Luster], [Quentin], [Tamar of Sorrow]...

All the members of the Shadow Clan were listed there, and if Sunny concentrated on a name, he could read their runes, no different from his own. That was a greater amount of information than what Sunny could receive by visiting the Soul Sea of his agents or sharing in their perception, which was quite convenient.

Below the members of the Shadow Clan, a different — and far greater, as well — list was shimmering in the darkness.

Shades: [Mountain King's Larva], [Imperial Slaver], [Mountain King], [Carapace Scavenger]...

If he concentrated on the list, all the soldiers of the Shadow Legion — myriads of them — were listed there, and if he concentrated on any particular one, a short description appeared as well.

Naturally, the list of his shades would be too long to just be shown like the rest of them. So, the Spell somehow made it appear both compact and nearly infinite, existing in both states at the same time. It took Sunny a bit of time to get used to that peculiar sight, but he quickly learned how to navigate the vast field of runes with no more than a thought.

He could probably spend a year... or a few... simply studying the description of each shade. It was like suddenly gaining access to the descriptions of a hundred thousand Echoes, each containing an intriguing piece of information.

His hands were already itching to start working on a new exploration report...

But for now, Sunny simply glanced away and continued to read the runes.

Attributes: [Lord of Shadows], [Flame of Divinity], [Blood Weave], [Bone Weave], [Flesh Weave], [Soul Weave], [Mind Weave], [Spirit Weave], [Jade Shell], [The Curse], [Fated].

The [Fated] Attribute was back... for better or for worse.

...Or both. Most likely both.

Sunny read further:

Aspect: [Shadow Slave].

Aspect Rank: Divine.

Innate Ability: [Shadow Bond].

He lingered for a long while, and then finally read the next string of runes.

They read:

...Master: Changing Star.

All of the divine gods and void beings are on fraud watch because they should have killed VTB's bitch ass LONG ago. I can understand the VTB doing this to Sunny because he is still a lower rank than the bird, but the bird is STILL around after all this time. This made me stop constantly raising the bird's stocks and made me question the aura of all the divine and void beings in their incapability of killing one Cursed Terror, whom they suffered from, long before Sunny should have ever had the misfortune of coming across.

My friend, that's why the thieves in all the stories are so legendary, stealing cults, empires and everything and never getting caught. To deserve the name "legendary thief," you need at least that much on your resume.

She has no combat abilities, I think, and even her ability to steal has a strong side effect. All this bird can do is steal, hide, and run away. She's barely shown any of these abilities, so we don't even know what she's really capable of.

It would be nice to know what VTB stole when it was a sacred human... And also, now that it have been cleaned of it's corruption, it might have transformed back into human form.

This is justified. Sunny didn't prepare shit for a being that troubled even gods, like even they couldn't kill this thing and sunny though he could kill it without any issues, like come on bro. So I think this is justified. Plus the new shadow Vile is strong. Atleast was strong in the fight, who knows how it performs in the future fights.

Also idk but vile seems so cute ^-^

I don’t understand why Sunny’s character is fated to be a slave from Nephis.

"Shadow Slave" doesn't mean "Nephis Slave".

I just hope the whole story won't gravitate around "Being a slave from Nephis."

Normally I would say that he is an attraction to the novel, but thinking about it, the desire for freedom (even though he gave it up) is Sunny's main driving force. He is by nature a very passive individual who does not take the initiative in moving the story forward. If it were up to him, he would have lived alone and happily in that castle on the forgotten shore, or been content with just being awaken and establishing a company, ordinary things that a person with divine aspect should not be content with.

I understand what you mean and I partially agree with you. Indeed, Sunny's character is a peculier one. From all my readings so far, I think he is the only one willing to be enslaved to someone else. (One can name it "Choice of freedom" if willing to)

I mean that being enslaved "to your ideas" is something more appealing than being enslaved to someone.

Even though Love can be somewhat called "Being a slave from your desires."

I think that I'm just frustrated to see a MC being enslaved by someone else. That conception is very bad to me.

So I hope things will evolve in a good way because I don't want to remember this story as "Being enslaved to someone is a good thing", if you know what I mean.

It’s like everyone’s IQ suddenly drops when we talk about the Shadow Bond. He had an entire character arc explaining why he was okay with becoming a slave again because to choose your own weakness/bond is a freedom as well.

Just because someone doesn't understand something doesn't mean he/she is an idiot. I Don’t know how your worldview is but if by definition those who doesn't agree with your opinion are idiots, then that's sad.

Don’t forget that we all are the idiot of someone else, you included. So be kind towards th others.

Calling someone an idiot isn’t mean. It’s barely an admonishment. I’m not taking any idiocy over the Shadow Bond, arguably the best symbolic representations of the potency of love and what it does to you. Anyone who stops at the surface level “don’t trust your slaver” message is doing this writing an injustice

I really love the contrast between the beginning of the battle, when Sunny was ready to die, and the end, when he's genuinely sad about being robbed. A truly greedy shadow. And then there are those little details, like how the Sunphies visited all the important locations from the third nightmare, but only Sunny participated in the destruction of the Weave and saw the reflection of the Nether. I wonder if that reflection will appear again in the story? Or that VTB used Sunny's favorite method to win. Or that after losing and regaining his destiny, Sunny does the same thing—sits and analyzes his abilities.

I honestly think that this is very stupid way of nerfing Sunny. I'm reading this since it had only 80 chapters or something like that so don't tell me how I can't appreciate it. I strongly believe that this was unnecessary, like sure let VTB escape but to steal all of this, and where is new memory he got for killing it? If he doesn't become Sacred by trying to escape from tomb it's all pointless.

How was he nerfed? The sacred shades abundance and rat king were mainly used for crowd control... When it comes down to a fight, his shadows Saint, slayer and fiend are stronger... Now he also got Vile.
If you want to talk about Sunny being nerfed, that happened when he lost his fate and connection to the nightmare spell. He missed out on thousands of memories, charms, echoes, and even his aspect legacy. He would have gotten better memories for his shadows...
We all know that Sunny relied a lot on his memories and was forced to adapt after he lost his connection to the spell.

With all the twists, turns and timey whimy stuff, how could you know what’s necessary. I doubt we have seen the last of the VTB. She might use her loot and new shadow powers to steal one of Asterions eyes or maybe even his brainwashing abilities. Hmmm.

I'm sure we will see more of VTB, it was obvious from very beginning that her importance to story is extraordinary. Honestly I doubt it will help in any shape of form against Asterion. VTB is already very powerful and if she really wanted do steal something from Asterion I doubt that Sunnys shades and citadel would help her that much. Anyway, the point is I just think this was unnecessary nerfing for Sunny. I'm not author and have no idea how will he use this, it's just my opinion as a long time reader.

You could be correct about Aster and the bird. But the VTB does appear, at least to me, to be the perfect counter to Asterions powers. I referenced the shadow stuff because the birds taste has changed since he became a shadow. Who knows what else has. It could have stolen everything and taking Noctis chair and the saddle seems sunless level petty. Also, spirits and higher can’t interact with the mortal world without an avatar and it has been written that they have little use for memories or echos. That might explain why he is left with just his 7 favorites. I imagine Sunni will pass down most of his soul sea goodies to Vile. Does he still have the horde of weapons he collected from the sunken city? G3 does not introduce things without reason. I’m honestly hoping this does not turn into mostly thought powers, finger flick killing, slapping people to death or hard to understand karmic backlash type plot armor. I know, that was oddly specific. My bad.

VTB is good counter for many, she reminds me of Amon from LOTM. As for powers, the closer they are to divine the more mysterious they are. Sunny will probably be able to kill weaker beings just by his will, since will is shown as one of the most important things here.

As I already said, I don't have problem with bird escapeing. But stealing everything so easily and him being unable to do anything about it is kind disappointing. Let's be honest, it's just too much. Also I'm sure Waiver let bird steal from him.

Bruh. It's VTB!! A sacred terror now. Might as well call it the spirit of stealing. People complained before about it not using its powers against Sunny. And now when it does other people complain about it using them? And what's so f#cking unnecessary about sunny losing some shades and a f#cking chair? He lost his fate and true name (and shadow dance with it) before. He lost all the people he cared about. If you don't like the Mc losing shit you might as well go read some overpowered-mc-harem-sloppy-f#cking-isekai.

Don't forget that Sunny gained his freedom back, even if only temporary, and we all know hom much he wanted it back. Now he did get his name and fate back, sure he should be able to use shadow dance now, but he lost his freedom again. In grand scheme of things it wasn't that big of a nerf, but I'm still saying that losing shades was unnecessary.

Ok fine what do you mean by unnecessary?
In terms of power. I don't think the stolen things will affect sunny rn. Sure when he reclaimes the sacred memory and aspect legacy reward he'd be more powerful. But right now it doesn't affect him this much.
Also, you are comparing the biggest f#cking heartbreak in all the novel with him getting kinda nerfed? Come on man.

I don't think this is a disaster for him, just unnecessary. I don't belive he was overpowered so much that he needed this. He lost shades that helped him enter tomb, which is rather important if u asked me. Just remember how much he struggled to conquer centipedes and now he lost them. The thing is I didn't write it nicely in my original comment, so there is a lot of people misunderstanding me. I don't usually comment on chapters so I didn't expect this much people commenting.

STILL WHAT DO YOU MEAN UNNECESSARY?
Sunny being at a disadvantage often gave us better fights and deeper combat. I'd say it was necessary to give vile more importance. And now that he has shadow bond he will find more things to do merging his domain with Neph's (mark my word in this one).
In conclusion, you arguing for the sake of it. G3 has every aspect of the novel really thought out. So you don't even understand what's necessary and what's not imo.

Honestly, I think G3 used this as a chance to nerf/balance Sunny's powers, and I'm kind of here for it. It was starting to feel like he had an endless pool of memories and shadows to pull from given any situation. Having the VTB take some of that away actually grounds his abilities and keeps the powerscaling from going completely off the rails.
