Chapter 2976: Confluence of Fates

The glass-like surface of the water was broken when the Vile Thieving Bird plunged into it, sending a towering plume of foam into the air and erasing the reflection of the Demon of Destiny from the surface of the Great River.

However, the damage had already been done.

The Thieving Bird would have easily endured being exposed to the echo of a daemon's killing intent on any other day... but not today.

Because today, it had already been weakened by the curses of three Supreme carriers of the Nightmare Spell, burned by the soul flame of Changing Star of the Immortal Flame clan — which was especially devastating when it touched anything tainted by the Corruption — and poisoned by the Death Will of the Lord of Shadows. Nether's killing intent was the last drop. The Thieving Bird's fierce desire to live had already been compromised by stealing Sunny's murderous determination to kill it, and now, it was finally overwhelmed. He could sense it... the boundless ocean of the loathsome creature's Will receded, broken at last by a succession of deadly blows.

The loathsome Terror was not dead yet... But it was not immune to being killed anymore, either.

‘It's up to me now.'

Sunny himself was one blow away from being destroyed, so it was a fair game. Either the Thieving Bird would deal him one final wound, or he would manage to deliver it a fatal strike before being killed.

Below him, the burned and ravaged body of the loathsome Terror was plunging into the depths.

Sunny allowed himself a split second of stillness. He collected himself, steeled his mind...

And then dismissed his wings, falling toward the rippling water like an immense spear made from pure darkness.

His serpentine body pierced the Great River like a blade and continued to plummet through the mass of water, breaching the distance separating him from the sinking Thieving Bird in an instant.

He reached it in the blink of an eye and moved nimbly, evading the harrowing talons of the loathsome Terror to coil himself around its battered body.

It was fitting, really, that he would finish this battle in the form of the Onyx Serpent — the form he had inherited from Daeron of the Twilight Sea.

Sunny coiled himself around the Thieving Bird and constricted his coils, immobilizing it. Strangling it.

Pulling it into the dark, crushing depths of the Great River.

The Thieving Bird struggled, but by now, its Will to break free was not strong enough to shatter his Will to destroy it. Sunny held tight, using whatever strength he had left to crush his enemy.

His fangs sank into the torn neck of the Thieving Bird, straining to break it.

He willed its death into existence...

Then, one final fissure swallowed them, pulling them apart.

Sunny rolled on something hard and assumed his human form, rising shakily to his feet.

This time, they landed on something solid. He smiled darkly behind Weaver's Mask, realizing where they were... even if he did not know when they were.

It was the heart of the Stone Titan — the outer shell of the Estuary, floating silently in the endless darkness. The battle was going to end where it had started, just like the Great River that flowed endlessly into itself. The Vile Thieving Bird was lying on the dark stone a small distance away, towering above it like a hill of charred feathers.

A lake of black blood was slowly spreading outward from its motionless form... but it was still alive. Sunny could sense the profane flame of its accursed life burning, even if it had become feeble.

"Ah... you look great, thief..."

Sunny looked terrible, as well.

The Jade Mantle was all but destroyed, and blood was seeping slowly from countless wounds on his mangled body. Some of those wounds were terrible enough to reveal white bone, and some of his bones were broken in turn.

He looked like a corpse... and an unfortunate corpse, at that, one that had either experienced a disastrous death or was viciously mutilated after succumbing to it.

But Sunny was alive too.

And at the moment — finally — he was a little bit more alive than the Vile Thieving Bird.

So, manifesting a dark blade out of shadows, he swayed and took an unsteady step forward.

His voice was quiet and frail:

"Nothing... nothing personal, buddy. You know how it is."

By which he meant that it was extremely personal, of course, and that the vile wretch had no idea.

But really, Sunny was just masking the fact that he was struggling to take another step. The Thieving Bird stirred at the sound of his elusive voice and turned its head, looking at him with a glassy, demented eye.

Sunny took another step, his mangled body tensing like a spring.

"Where's that adorable spawn of yours? Ah, I really hope it shows up."

Sunny smiled weakly, knowing that if the Vile Spawn attacked him right now, things would get ugly.

Well... he wasn't without recourse, either. His Shadows were not strong enough to face the Thieving Bird itself, but the odious spawn had not yet matured enough to become an overwhelming threat to them. Sunny could call upon one or two...

The Thieving Bird just stared at him, madness seething in its tired, round eye. Sunny inhaled deeply.

"Give it back..."

He took a step forward.

“Give back what you stole from me!"

He pushed himself into a rapid lunge.

And at the same time, he activated the [Where is my eye?] enchantment of Weaver's Mask — the enchantment that had been created and received such a peculiar name because of the very creature lying on cold stones in front of him.

Instantly, the unfathomable tapestry of fate unfurled in front of him, behind him, all around him. Permeating all of existence — and the Void, as well. Its endless expanse was just as harrowing as he remembered, and beholding it put just as much strain on his mind.

So, Sunny focused on only a tiny stretch of the great tapestry... only on the part of its infinite complexity that had to do with the Vile Thieving Bird.

And he saw it... something that he had never seen before.

He saw the true nature of the [Fated] Attribute, woven out the Strings of Fate. Most living beings had a single string piercing their heart, representing their fate. The string extended from the past into the future, touching countless threads and making connections with them — some brief, some lasting and profound.

The Vile Thieving Bird had its own String of Fate, as well, even if its future was not attached to anything, unmoored and unclear. Just like the rest of them now that the future was no more.

However, there was also something else... Sunny's eyes widened in horror as he beheld his stolen fate.

Myriad Strings of Fate converged on the Thieving Bird, attached to something hidden deep within its being — so many of them, in fact, that they obscured the world entirely, painting all of existence in a dark hue.

The Thieving Bird was terrifying and mighty, but in front of the untold myriads of endless strings, it looked tiny like an ant.

It looked like a powerless marionette tangled hopelessly in an infinity of endless strings.

That was [Fated].

A point of convergence, a nexus... a confluence of fates.

It was awesome and ghastly enough to give Sunny pause...

Almost.

The Thieving Bird moved to meet his reckless attack, but it was a little bit too late.

Sunny reached into its soul, like he would reach into a Memory to weave its enchantments. Only, this time, he did not stop at that and reached deeper still.

Until his fingers wrapped around the nexus of all the countless Strings of Fate, grasping it tightly.

...And with the other hand, Sunny drove his slaying blade into the Thieving Bird's burning, demented eye.

Killing it.

To think there were 9 tangled Looms during the Nines existence. Don't tell me he will inherit Nephs command of Dying from the bird lmao, that will be so absurd.

I had a vaguely similar worry, but maybe it would cancel out since Sunny had to die to become supreme. I doubt that logic would work, but I also doubt it’ll actually be an issue since the VTB did ultimately die. Could you imagine it really did work like that and we had to accompany Sunny while he tries to survive the Shadow realm or something, though? Would be wack

So, I wanted to know how far the True Names go. They're about people's destinies. Cassie's, 'Song of the Fallen,' means she's destined to sing about the death of those close to her and those forgotten. I don't know if this will last until she dies. Nephis's, 'Star of Change,' 'Mutable Star,' or 'Star of Ruin,' are different interpretations of her True Name. They're all correct in a way. But then, when it's all over, when it's really over—I'm not talking about when they defeat the final boss, but even after that—until now, Nephis has been bringing ruin to old ways of governing and change. After the final boss, this will probably continue until the consequences of what happens are resolved. But after everything stabilizes, change wouldn't be necessary, and nobody would want Ruin. So, will her True Name be complete? If so, will she receive another one? Now, getting back to the topic, Sunny, where sunny yours is "lost from light," here it's interpreted as him being destined to stay out of the spotlight (out of sight, always hidden). But if you consider that he reached the peak of this by being forgotten by everyone, as well as fulfilling another interpretation of his True Name where "Lost from Light" is interpreted as a reference to Nephis, then could he receive another one? Yes, probably? No. Of course, I wanted his main Aspect to evolve. In the beginning, he was "Slave of the Temple," then it evolved into "Slave of the Shadows." I wanted it to evolve again. What name? I don't know, it could be "Contract of the Shadows," "Husband of the Shadows." I also think his innate ability should evolve into something that doesn't turn him into a slave, something that if he receives an order, he can refuse.

I believe that true names describe not only a person's fate, but also their personality.
This is clearly evident in both Nephis and Sunny, when he was left without a fate. The Lord of Shadows was known, but Sunny himself was not. Nephis is a star of destruction and change, even with a broken fate.

So wait. If Sunny can attack and use "where is my eye" on asterion he can remove asterions fate in the tapestry of fate right?
Which would in turn make Asterion fateless that results to oblivion.

But still I'm excited to what sunny would hear ring on his ear. [You have received a new shadow] hoping. Haha

I think it is the reason why cassie had told them that Asterion can only be killed through oblivion. And far as I know asterion is living because he is like an idea, as long as he is an idea of people he will live. But if people loses the idea of him he will die. So yeah oblivion is really needed. Steal asterions fate so that he may be forgotten by all.

Idk maN something tells me that the VTB might be a mad conniving shadow. If Slayer was that much of a nuisance, I can only imagine how much resistance the VTB could put up given their similarly unique existence. Not to mention its apparent spawn, which we have no updates on yet.

Also you make a good point, but there had to have been a reason that they couldn’t have done that before they left. Sure they needed to make this trip for Sunny’s fate anyways, but there has to be something that either limited them before or that they gained after visiting the Tomb of Ariel. In either case, I definitely can’t make sense of it either. Can’t wait to see the plot unfold though

Imagine him playing something like hot or cold/marco polo with his shadow bond or whatever with Nephis. (I know that’s not how it works but it’s fun to think about) I think you’re specifically wondering where he is in the Tomb of Ariel’s timeline, but I’m more curious about how long it took for them to reach the Tomb of Ariel in relation to the Mordret and Asterion war. I wonder if they’re already on their way back to intervene by the time of Mordret needing to be killed by Kindret to survive, or if they hadn’t even made it to the tomb by the start of the final battle and we’re still in for one hell of a ride before they get back.

Even then, I wonder what revelations we’re set to be given from Sunny being temporally displaced.

That's interesting too, although it doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things, because of the way TOA works. What I would find strange/hopefully not is if Sunphis arrives right at the end of the fight and finishes it. I honestly hope that Sunny and Nephis aren't the ones who bring the fight to a close; I want it to be the efforts of Effie, Kai, Jet, and Cassie. I don't want it to always be those two who finish it.

Nah I agree, I make the same point further down the chain. The only reason I’m considering people being suspicious of his death as a potential outcome is because it would accelerate the rate of “corruption” or whatever is consuming the world specifically from the forgotten god. It basically has too much plot potential to entirely ignore as a possibility, imo, but it’s far from the only potential point of acceleration that would serve as the catalyst for Sunny and Nephis to rush to undergo Apotheosis even sooner than they’re currently anticipating to

I think it's going to be quite complicated, because those with intelligent thinking will be able to realize that Sunny is alive (not to mention those who already know). Even those who paid close attention to Sunny before he was forgotten by everyone thought that, despite being quite strong, Sunny wasn't on the same level as Nefis, nor did he have the same quality (Divine Aspect). They also knew that Sunny always did his best not to draw attention, so it would be logical to suspect that his "death" was a trick. I would say that one of those who was never informed about his survival and yet will know is Professor Julius. Sunny and Cassie are also going to be in big trouble with the troupe, because I'm sure Effie, Kay, and Jet will want to know the truth about the matter, not to mention Rain, Beth, Luster, Kim, the Nightwalker's son, and although the human population in general didn't pay much attention to Sunny, they paid a lot of attention to Nefis, Rem films, and pieces of her scattered everywhere, and if they don't remember immediately, they will remember when watching a film about her and realizing that someone is missing, that a character, even if most believed to be weak, was still memorable, "Are you crazy?!" In the play "The Devil of Antarctica," the protagonist is shorter and less muscular, not to mention that you'll probably notice that a guy who didn't exist (or rather, he existed but then disappeared) appeared out of nowhere in his memories . Sure, G3 could do the most hateful thing she could possibly do: when Cassie (probably herself) is wiping away the memories about Asterio, she could wipe away the ones about Sunny too.

I agree with basically all of your points, I’m just equally curious about how much their belief in his death influences the result. On one hand, it could be just greater sense of loss realizing Sunny betrayed them if they don’t question it, or easily resolved if Cassie becomes Supreme and gains collective memory manipulation. However, this could also be the catalyst for the next arc, Sunny gets his Fate back and forces them to undergo Apotheosis and later rise to godhood much sooner than they expected even with their very cramped schedule. Whatever the case, the result will be shaped by the plot, or serve to shape the plot itself

Yes, I've commented on this before. Sunny went in search of freedom because, despite wanting a relationship with Nefis, he felt that as things stood, their potential relationship would never work out. However, it's important to consider that Nefis didn't even have time to adapt to their dynamic. At the beginning of the story, Sunny and Nefis acted as partners, but Sunny was also a student. The orders Nefis gave were either to teach him or to coordinate battle plans. After the Forgotten Shore, Nefis was lost in the Desert of Nightmares, and Sunny went her own way. When she suddenly returned, he didn't know how to feel. He liked her, hated her, wanted a relationship with her, wanted to kill her. And so, thanks to misunderstandings and a confusion of feelings, Sunny fled to Antarctica. Nefis didn't even have time to adapt to life back in civilization, much less learn how to manage their relationship. During their time together in Antarctica, everything was full of plot twists and turns. Secrets, but she was at least trying to make it work. At TOA, their relationship developed significantly, and that's where it gets complicated. From her perspective, everything was going very well; she was learning their new dynamic, they were closer, she was hoping to go back to how things were at the beginning of the story, hoping and trusting that he would reappear in Verge with her. But for Sunny, it was an even bigger mess. He was being manipulated by the Sin of Consolation, the Mad Prince, Cassie, and Twilight. He didn't know what to do. He wanted to be with Nefis, he felt their relationship was almost there, and above all, he wanted to be free.

I'm afraid of Nefi's reaction, because she might feel many different things depending on her way of thinking. She might be disappointed because he betrayed her, sad for the same reason and for having forgotten him and spent time away from him, angry. She could also be happy if her thought process goes along these lines: he went after his freedom, he got it, if he came back it's because he sees a future in our relationship even if he has these chains around his neck. So it's quite complicated.

I know what you mean, I’ve made many similar arguments across thiS chapters comment section, usually because I don’t expect people to read the entire chain for context. Also, good lord in all of the chaos I forgot to consider how Nephis would react. That used to be the only thing I was concerned about, too. I do think that the experiences they had after Sunny becoming fateless will help bridge the gap in “adjustment,” but I expect it to create a split in their professional and personal relationships. Nephis is many things, and among them, practicality is near the top of her most dominating aspects. She will ultimately accept and agree with his choice as it both made him (and her, by extension) stronger while also creating a concealed weapon they were able to use to take care of Song and Valor. As far as the practicality of his actions and how they opened up worlds of possibilities, I think she’ll understand that part. But on the personal side, she’s bound to feel betrayed to some degree. It might not spell death to their relationship, but it will probably manifest as a minute doubt that lingers and will come to a head over time. It’s possible that Sunny accepting that you choose your own chains means they find some way to come to peace with it pretty quickly, but that’s not a very intriguing arc, so I don’t expect it to happen. However, it would be phenomenal if she didn’t skip a beat and was just happy to have him back, especially when you remember how cryptic he had to be while he was fateless and the subsequent blind trust she had to have in him

I mean even if they knew him, they’d still think him dead. They may know of him, but their belief in him being dead obviously greatly diminished his threat to existence regardless of people knowing of him. That and like another comment suggested, Cassie is on the cusp of becoming Supreme, which may greatly enhance her control over memories. The ability of memory manipulation in authority is a concerning notion, but might work great in this set of circumstance. Plus, it might be how they weaken Asterion if that is a development that happens; Cassie can continuously wipe the memories of the population, especially the most powerful subjects, in a tug of war with Asterion
