Chapter 2976: Confluence of Fates

The glass-like surface of the water was broken when the Vile Thieving Bird plunged into it, sending a towering plume of foam into the air and erasing the reflection of the Demon of Destiny from the surface of the Great River.

However, the damage had already been done.

The Thieving Bird would have easily endured being exposed to the echo of a daemon's killing intent on any other day... but not today.

Because today, it had already been weakened by the curses of three Supreme carriers of the Nightmare Spell, burned by the soul flame of Changing Star of the Immortal Flame clan — which was especially devastating when it touched anything tainted by the Corruption — and poisoned by the Death Will of the Lord of Shadows. Nether's killing intent was the last drop. The Thieving Bird's fierce desire to live had already been compromised by stealing Sunny's murderous determination to kill it, and now, it was finally overwhelmed. He could sense it... the boundless ocean of the loathsome creature's Will receded, broken at last by a succession of deadly blows.

The loathsome Terror was not dead yet... But it was not immune to being killed anymore, either.

‘It's up to me now.'

Sunny himself was one blow away from being destroyed, so it was a fair game. Either the Thieving Bird would deal him one final wound, or he would manage to deliver it a fatal strike before being killed.

Below him, the burned and ravaged body of the loathsome Terror was plunging into the depths.

Sunny allowed himself a split second of stillness. He collected himself, steeled his mind...

And then dismissed his wings, falling toward the rippling water like an immense spear made from pure darkness.

His serpentine body pierced the Great River like a blade and continued to plummet through the mass of water, breaching the distance separating him from the sinking Thieving Bird in an instant.

He reached it in the blink of an eye and moved nimbly, evading the harrowing talons of the loathsome Terror to coil himself around its battered body.

It was fitting, really, that he would finish this battle in the form of the Onyx Serpent — the form he had inherited from Daeron of the Twilight Sea.

Sunny coiled himself around the Thieving Bird and constricted his coils, immobilizing it. Strangling it.

Pulling it into the dark, crushing depths of the Great River.

The Thieving Bird struggled, but by now, its Will to break free was not strong enough to shatter his Will to destroy it. Sunny held tight, using whatever strength he had left to crush his enemy.

His fangs sank into the torn neck of the Thieving Bird, straining to break it.

He willed its death into existence...

Then, one final fissure swallowed them, pulling them apart.

Sunny rolled on something hard and assumed his human form, rising shakily to his feet.

This time, they landed on something solid. He smiled darkly behind Weaver's Mask, realizing where they were... even if he did not know when they were.

It was the heart of the Stone Titan — the outer shell of the Estuary, floating silently in the endless darkness. The battle was going to end where it had started, just like the Great River that flowed endlessly into itself. The Vile Thieving Bird was lying on the dark stone a small distance away, towering above it like a hill of charred feathers.

A lake of black blood was slowly spreading outward from its motionless form... but it was still alive. Sunny could sense the profane flame of its accursed life burning, even if it had become feeble.

"Ah... you look great, thief..."

Sunny looked terrible, as well.

The Jade Mantle was all but destroyed, and blood was seeping slowly from countless wounds on his mangled body. Some of those wounds were terrible enough to reveal white bone, and some of his bones were broken in turn.

He looked like a corpse... and an unfortunate corpse, at that, one that had either experienced a disastrous death or was viciously mutilated after succumbing to it.

But Sunny was alive too.

And at the moment — finally — he was a little bit more alive than the Vile Thieving Bird.

So, manifesting a dark blade out of shadows, he swayed and took an unsteady step forward.

His voice was quiet and frail:

"Nothing... nothing personal, buddy. You know how it is."

By which he meant that it was extremely personal, of course, and that the vile wretch had no idea.

But really, Sunny was just masking the fact that he was struggling to take another step. The Thieving Bird stirred at the sound of his elusive voice and turned its head, looking at him with a glassy, demented eye.

Sunny took another step, his mangled body tensing like a spring.

"Where's that adorable spawn of yours? Ah, I really hope it shows up."

Sunny smiled weakly, knowing that if the Vile Spawn attacked him right now, things would get ugly.

Well... he wasn't without recourse, either. His Shadows were not strong enough to face the Thieving Bird itself, but the odious spawn had not yet matured enough to become an overwhelming threat to them. Sunny could call upon one or two...

The Thieving Bird just stared at him, madness seething in its tired, round eye. Sunny inhaled deeply.

"Give it back..."

He took a step forward.

“Give back what you stole from me!"

He pushed himself into a rapid lunge.

And at the same time, he activated the [Where is my eye?] enchantment of Weaver's Mask — the enchantment that had been created and received such a peculiar name because of the very creature lying on cold stones in front of him.

Instantly, the unfathomable tapestry of fate unfurled in front of him, behind him, all around him. Permeating all of existence — and the Void, as well. Its endless expanse was just as harrowing as he remembered, and beholding it put just as much strain on his mind.

So, Sunny focused on only a tiny stretch of the great tapestry... only on the part of its infinite complexity that had to do with the Vile Thieving Bird.

And he saw it... something that he had never seen before.

He saw the true nature of the [Fated] Attribute, woven out the Strings of Fate. Most living beings had a single string piercing their heart, representing their fate. The string extended from the past into the future, touching countless threads and making connections with them — some brief, some lasting and profound.

The Vile Thieving Bird had its own String of Fate, as well, even if its future was not attached to anything, unmoored and unclear. Just like the rest of them now that the future was no more.

However, there was also something else... Sunny's eyes widened in horror as he beheld his stolen fate.

Myriad Strings of Fate converged on the Thieving Bird, attached to something hidden deep within its being — so many of them, in fact, that they obscured the world entirely, painting all of existence in a dark hue.

The Thieving Bird was terrifying and mighty, but in front of the untold myriads of endless strings, it looked tiny like an ant.

It looked like a powerless marionette tangled hopelessly in an infinity of endless strings.

That was [Fated].

A point of convergence, a nexus... a confluence of fates.

It was awesome and ghastly enough to give Sunny pause...

Almost.

The Thieving Bird moved to meet his reckless attack, but it was a little bit too late.

Sunny reached into its soul, like he would reach into a Memory to weave its enchantments. Only, this time, he did not stop at that and reached deeper still.

Until his fingers wrapped around the nexus of all the countless Strings of Fate, grasping it tightly.

...And with the other hand, Sunny drove his slaying blade into the Thieving Bird's burning, demented eye.

Killing it.

Didn't Sunny spread his will across the Tomb of Ariel? Asterion said that for one to reach Sacred one has to integrate themself fully with their world. How better does he integrate himself to become Sacred than to spread his will across all of places and time while actively killing a Cursed Terror? I think he might achieve natural apotheosis and he won't fail like Mordret because he isn't in the realm of corruption. The conditions are perfect!

I'm wondering that too except.. now what? I thought he would have to become Sacred to defeat the Vile Thieving Bird or get his fate back through Shadow Dancing the bird and copying its ability to steal and then somehow retaking it only to get separated from the bird to go on a shadow dance training arc and then using his 7 avatars to copy 7 op abilities to kill the bird but this ended too fast.

Like what else is there for him to do in the Tomb anymore? Kill the Spawn? oh maybe the spawn will get an unexpected power up causing Sunny a lot of trouble like Fiend did only to eventually become a Shadow. Because Sunny is underestimating the Spawn very much.

Dude i tried not to talk but this kinda annoys me. So you thought sunny will become spirit in the tomb huh? That's a very stupid thing to believe. Sunny becoming supreme was the best of the godgrave arc and the culmination of all the planning, conspiring and effort they put to destroy the former sovereigns and it was one of the most peak moment in the novel. You think G3 gonna replicate that? He wouldn't. It would be too rushed. Especially that he teased the fifth nightmare by the dreamspawn saying it is not like other nightmares and it consists of two trials. G3 won't throw the 5th nightmare out the window like that.

And something else... What if Sunny does become a spirit. Then what? What would challenge him and what would dare stand in the way of a sacred titan? It would be too boring. And furthermore, this ark has its own miraculous achievements already. Reaching the tomb, Restoring his fate, killing both VTB and Asterion, bringing back Ananke and the river people and hopefully getting a new shadow. You think apotheosis would fit in this ark? That would be bad writing and pacing.

      Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm sorry to say this but I think it's a completely valid opinion for anyone to have for Sunny to achieve apotheosis in the TOA. First of all, The TOA arc was the most anticipated arc after the third Nightmare where everyone was anticipating the meeting between this Sunny and the young Sunny. The faceoff against the Vile thieving bird and the eventual return of his fate. It wouldn't be wrong for anyone to assume that he'd achieve something and gain a huge powerup in this Hyperbolic time chamber type of environment. Another reason is because Mordret failed and thus showing Sunny achieve something Mordret was incapable of doing would be a good way to show his growth since the third nightmare.

The hype for the fifth nightmare is a valid argument but I think that should be left for the rest of the cohort to get some proper screentime for their solo arcs. Although if they do find Smile of Heaven in the nightmare, nephis should be there but still, it's not that crazy to assume for Sunny to get a huge powerup in this arc

Your expectations are your expectations. Nothing more. If g3 keeps pandering to fans, this book will turn into idiotic fanfiction. Predictions should be based on facts, not your wishes. You still have the right to express your wishes, but saying that your wishes might come true because you really want them is nonsense. And now we have enough facts to say that a natural apotheosis for Sunny is almost impossible.

How long has Mordreth been a benchmark for strength? Do you seriously want Sunny's growth to be measured by an achievement the King of Offscreen failed to achieve?

Spirit is too important and powerful role to spread across the entire cohort. And the fifth nightmare is a difficult test, both for the participants and for humanity. Not all cohort members need apotheosis at all. Kai and Effie have always been the most humane members of the cohort; these two have the smallest chance of achieving apotheosis. The best solution for them would be to remain Supreme and protect humanity while Sunny, Nephys, and possibly Cassie and Jet are away.

I understand it but I didn't say I want Sunny to achieve apotheosis in the TOA. That is for a later date in a more extreme setting. I just want the rest of the cohort to shine asw.

The only thing is you guys keep berating people over their theories and opinions. No one wants g3 to write the stories according to the readers expectations because it would become a boring predictable fanfic like you said but you can at least let someone give their thoughts and opinions without saying "Thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard", if u want to provide a counter argument, just provide facts respectfully

Discussion should be devoid of emotion, but communication should not. Everyone here has the right to express both their thoughts and emotions. Everyone has the right to write complete nonsense and call someone an idiot for writing complete nonsense. Of course, you need to know your limits, but determining that limit is very difficult. But you also can't forbid people from expressing emotions. There is no completely winning strategy here, only a constant striving for perfection. In my opinion, this site copes with this task quite well.

In any case, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. Or rather, I did want to, but I tried not to. I've been a little toxic lately.

Respectfully though, what's your image of a perfect character for a person? One who easily gets mad and starts name calling people for small reasons or someone who can endure the worst of the worst and still be respectful?

Not respectful as in if the other person commits a heinous crime, you don't reprimand them but respectful in the sense that during an argument, they provide arguments without any shouting or name calling and listen to the other person even if they're screaming or insulting you (only you). They leave the argument even if they're in the right and some right of there's hasn't been taken from them (For example, having an argument over something random rather than a right that has been taking from them like the other person stole something)

What I'm trying to say is that we should strive to have an ideal character. Not completely emotionless but not quick to anger or name-calling.

A red-haired tsundere with a size C and a big wallet full of green crusty papers, I suppose.

Seriously, I think we shouldn't strive for a perfect character, but for perfect communication. Firstly, creating or imitating a perfect character is simply more difficult than perfect communication. Secondly, we don't really care about a person's character; we only care about their communication with them. Especially here, on the internet, on a site with pirated novels. In serious adult life, this approach obviously doesn't work.

So what is perfect communication? It's communication that results in the participants receiving the response they desire. If a person wants criticism, they will receive it; if they want a joke, they will hear laughter; if they want to swear, they will be insulted; if they want to express their emotions, they will be supported. There are also secondary desires (everyone wants to see something funny, kind, or useful) and individual ones. Perfect communication implies maximizing the desired responses from both parties.

But you can't think only about others, so you think first about what you want and act accordingly. It's here that line between "me" and "you" exists, where ideal communication lies. That's what I meant by "ideal."

Trust me brother, the world needs everyone to strive towards a perfect character. Had everyone tried to do that without taking the rights away from another person or arguing over small things which escalated into big fights، then I'm sure the world would have been a better place.

Perfect communication, however doesn't exist. You can never have truly perfect conversation with another person. They will have their views and you will have your own and you might never agree. Usually arguments even small ones get escalated to a fight. I'm sure alot of the wars or murders escalate from these types of arguments as well.

If a person wants criticism, they will receive it; if they want a joke, they will hear laughter; if they want to swear, they will be insulted; if they want to express their emotions, they will be supported.

You can never understand the desires of the other person so perfect communication is not possible. However, each of us can strive towards an ideal role model.

All opinions are valid as long as they stay on topic. But we talking about not only whst we believe but also what the characters themselves believe. If Sunny and Nephis spent decades or centuries inside the TOA then maybe it would be more probable but Nephis doesn't have a solid domain rn and Sunny has not once thought about apotheosis since entering the TOA. Especially considering it would be the riskiest of the 3 options to take out Asterion (VTB powers, Oblivion and Apotheosis). If any of the characters besides Asterion achieve divinity it'd feel too rushed. Its all possible but It hasn't even been a solid decade since they became supreme is apotheosis really that easy? If Sunny had to die to become Supreme then is fighting a Cursed terror really all its gonna take to become a literal God? I'd be disappointed if the conditions were that simple.

While abrasive, I agree. I said it in some other comment, but there’s no way he undergoes apotheosis before he leaves the Tomb of Ariel. It very improbably might happen in his fight with Asterion, but there’s no way they have all of the one-on-one arcs with Sunny and the crew where he prepares them to helm the mantle of humanity as supremes while he and Nephis fight the fifth nightmare just to NOT fight the fifth nightmare. There will definitely be some unexpected development, but there’s almost no way they don’t fight the fifth nightmare. With that in mind, every nightmare more or less gets its own arc, there’s too much already going on in this one for the current events to just be exposition to the nightmare

The Tomb of Ariel is not a realm. Sunny is not the spirit of Death yet. And when did he spread his will "across" the TOA and "all places and time"? Btw the Tomb is very much in the Dream Realm.
I think apotheosis has to do with not only ones will but their domain too has to elevate. It's was easier for Mordret because he rules himself. Sunny so far is the "lord" of shadows..sacred shadows and above can take his commands as fluff if they feel like it..he can't even dominate the vtb spawn a mere devil and he's a titan, his authority amongst shadows was shit against a mere devil. I think apotheosis is still far away for Sunny and likely will be done in a Nightmare and not natural. I think rn we wait for a POV switch and something about Oblivion to happen then we go back to Cassie.
