Chapter 2828: Escape from NQSC

Now that most residents of the outskirts left for the Dream Realm, the vast human hives that had teemed with life and desperation stood mostly empty. There were still people living there, though — even if some dormitory towers only had a few dozen inhabitants instead of tens of thousands.

A family that had once sheltered in a single residential cell now occupied an entire block. Even then, the rest of the floor was empty.

In the dim twilight of the early dawn, a gaunt man emerged into a corridor and leaned on the wall, contorted in a violent coughing fit. His wife was already busy boiling water to hydrate packs of synthpaste for the kids — however, he had to put on his work uniform and depart for an early shift. Wiping his lips, he stumbled toward the laundry room.

A few seconds later, however, he froze and looked ahead in horror.

Out there in front of him, the claustrophobic expanse of the dormitory tower was drowning in cold mist, and for a brief moment, he saw a ghostly silhouette moving through it.

Flesh as pale as that of a corpse, harrowing burns that seeped with scarlet blood... Screaming, the man staggered away.

"G—ghost! Ghost!"

Turning around, he ran as if his life depended on it.

A few moments after the man fled, a pale arm extended from the mist toward the clothesline.

‘It's like I came full circle.'

Jet had grown up in a dormitory hive very much like this one, surrounded by gaunt people with waxy skin who were prone to coughing fits. She had been sickly and neglected, as well, wearing clothes that were threadbare and did not fit her frail figure.

Some clothes were better than no clothes, though.

Putting on a pair of worn pants, a shabby shirt, and a ragged coat, she grimaced when the coarse fabric scraped against her burns and turned into mist. Soon, she was on the ground floor of the dormitory tower, hiding in the shadows of the back entrance awning and looking up.

Out there in the pale sky above NQSC, a storm of crows was painting mesmerizing patterns among clouds as it flowed in a vast murmuration.

Her expression darkened.

‘Old man...’

Jet could tell a lot about what was going on in the city just from how it sounded. On this hazy morning, there were sounds of armored PTVs rolling on the asphalt, sirens howling in the distance, and the hum of sharp voices calling out to each other, muffled by the distance.

These particular noises were different from the usual clamor of the city, as well as from the panicked urgency of an opening Gate. As someone who had been the government's enforcer for many years, Jet knew the nature of this rough melody too well.

This was the sound of a large-scale manhunt.

Things like that happened rarely, since the government preferred to solve most issues quietly. However, she had led a few of such manhunts herself.

Today, Jet was quite sure that the person being hunted... was her.

Finding herself on the other side of law enforcement felt strange.

She traced the murmurations of the crows for a few moments, then looked away so that Wake of Ruin did not sense her gaze.

‘Is he enthralled, too?'

Even if Jet did not want to believe it, she had an ominous feeling that the person in charge of hunting her down was none other than Old Cor. There were too many signs that pointed at him... and even if there weren't, preparing for the worst had never failed her in the past. The world had nothing but the worst in store for the people born in the era of the Nightmare Spell, after all.

Getting to her destination unnoticed while Wake of Ruin was watching the city from high above would be difficult.

Muttering a quiet curse, Jet hid deeper in the shadows and collapsed into a torrent of mist.

She traveled into the depths of the city while hiding her presence as best she could. When it was possible, she moved underground. When the patrolling Awakened got too close, she avoided them. When a barrier stood in her way, she passed through it like a wraith.

Catching a ghost in the cauldron of human souls as vast as NQSC was not easy, even for the powerful machinery of the government and its oldest champion, Wake of Ruin. Especially if that ghost knew every gear of that complicated machine by heart.

That said... the city was different from how it had been the last time she visited.

It was in the throes of internal conflict. The streets were oddly desolate. Here and there, burning vehicles were scattered on the roads. Groups of soldiers were moving between them, wearing grim expressions. Many buildings were gaping with broken windows, pieces of furniture and debris spilling on the pavements.

In some places, the ground was smeared with blood.

The noise of the city was wrong and unhealthy, as if NQSC was being consumed by fever.

‘It's all going south.'

The sun had already risen by the time Jet made it to where Cassie had sent her.

In front of her was the heavily fortified government compound in the heart of the city — the very place where Jet had been anchored before secretly moving her tether to the desolate ruin in the outskirts.

She had gone to all the trouble to escape it, so naturally, the Dreamspawn and his servants would not expect that she would immediately return here. In that sense, her destination alone had helped her remain unnoticed.

The government compound was in disarray. The gates were open, and there were no guards posted outside. Smoke was billowing from the windows of several levels... which meant that the automatic defense systems had either malfunctioned or were disabled, failing to execute a lockdown protocol. Most tellingly of all, there were muffled sounds of gunshots and heavy impacts resounding from inside.

Jet assumed her human shape and walked across the broken asphalt barefoot, her ragged coat fluttering in the wind.

Her expression was unamused.

“I leave for a bit, and the whole place is a mess..."

Stepping over the unconscious body of an Awakened soldier, she entered the compound.

Hmm I wonder how jets natural awakening would have worked if there was no Nightmare... or maybe she wouldn't discover her flaw until she died of old age or in battle?

      It would probably be different.

Perhaps fate would guide her to awakening, someone killing her when she lived in the outskirts.

LoL. Maybe G3 forgot about that again. I have to agree with you on this.

Sunny when he was still connected to the spell had backup armors for his backup armor. He even had a memory shadow chair as a souvenir from Noc and I think he's still got it until now. Also the priestess clothes from ananakin. He really liked to collect a lot of stuff before but it seems G3 discontinued Sunny's habitual vice of collecting souvenirs from expeditions.

What my point is, shouldn't he have started building a more extensive collection of junk now that he's able to weave the memories himself? Once a collector always a collector y'all know that.

Damn, Jet stole some poor worker's last pair of pants.
But seriously, is there any reason the cohort didn't submit to Asterion? Besides the plot armor, of course. Cassie has an Aspect. What about the others? Are they have some kind of artifact set? Have they finally learned to use Will? Maybe it's because they already have their own Domain? Maybe this is some kind of manipulation of Sanfis? Like, I won't completely capture your friends so you can see their state and worry. What the hell?

I am mostly okay with main characters being immune, even if its plot armor. Most others fallen because there were no hope for victory for them, and main team knows there is. And Hope seems to be big deal. And some characters are too stubborn. And some commented that lord of shadows is still scarier.
      Fallen had no other choice.

The Ascension Guide by the Unknown Stone

First, let's define the terminology. Everything is created from the Will and Concepts, or is controlled by the Will and Concepts. In this case, these are similar situations, so we will omit the possible differences and accept the first option as the truth. The core - the Flame, a blank sheet of pure Will, the shell - a set of basic "personal" Concepts (body, shadow, soul, mind, fate, etc.), and the environment - all other Concepts.

To develop the shell, you need to develop the core. To develop the core, you need to feed it with someone else's "colored" Will. This will inevitably "color" the core. But why doesn't this happen all the time? Because the shell prevents it from happening.

So what should I do? Its simple. We brake the shell. There are two ways.:
    1. Search long and hard for a place, time, and situation in which the shell will not be able to resist external Concepts and will begin to blend in with the outside world.
    2. Nourish your shell with someone else's essence\Will. Since the foreign essence is higher in rank\concentration\quality, it cannot simply be absorbed into your shell like another Will embodied in objects (food, water) and begin to "settle" in the shell.
Now, use the small amount of Will that makes you alive. Use it to gather the essence you have accumulated and concentrate it into the core of your soul. This is the fuel that will keep the Flame burning at the crucial moment. Congratulations, you are one small step away. Go and break yourself. Use the surrounding Concepts to change yourself, to make a hole through which you can feed your Flame. Have you succeeded? Congratulations! You have gained a Flaw. Use it wisely.

Now your Flame is burning brighter, "warming up" and changing your shell. The interaction between your shell and your Flame is commonly referred to as an Aspect. You can continue to feed your Flame and "break" your shell again. This will give your Flame another boost. By using the essence and Will you have accumulated from your external Concepts, your Flame will ignite with renewed vigor. This will increase your Rank.

But please, don't rush. Remember how you infused your shell with essence? I'm referring to the first option. You had to blend your Concepts with external Concepts, resulting in the ability to channel essence\Will into the Flame. I suggest you do the same. Find a way to modify your shell, making it more "Conceptual" to facilitate the flow of external Will. This change will increase the connection between the core, shell, and environment, allowing different Concepts to better feed off of each other. This method will also allow both your personal Concepts and external Concepts to have a stronger influence on the Flame. And the better you nurture your original essence, the clearer and deeper its Concept becomes. This will be very useful to you in the future, when you become Sacred. You don't want to become the embodiment of inexpressible abstract nonsense, do you? If you do everything correctly, your Aspect's rank will also increase during your ascension. This means that your Flame is now one step closer to a proper and complete diet. Your goal is to learn how to shape and nourish your Flame perfectly. This will not only give you a "cool" divine rank Aspect, but also allow you to form additional soul cores.

In general, this is the whole guide. You have broken yourself and gained an Aspect and a Flaw. Continue to change yourself, your life, and your surroundings to better nourish your Flame, and don't forget to "break" yourself from time to time. Increase the rank of your Aspect, increase the rank of yourself, dictate your Will to the world, and don't let any "divine" mockery define your boundaries and desires.

The manual is not recommended for use by noble creatures due to the inability to establish a deep two-way connection between their personal Concepts and the Flame granted to them.

(The guide is outdated due to the release of the Nightmare Spell)

I hope we ll see how Rain ascend, I always curious about the natural ascension way, and imo it will play as the final card for Sunphis vs dream god when they're divine titan. Because daemons are stated to be divine titan yet they re inferior to gods, there s no way Sunphis defeating a god as a mere Divine Titan

Demons aren't humans. We have a very clear hierarchy of power. Humans (and all those who carry a spark directly from the Flame) > exceptional noble creatures > ordinary noble creatures. Demons, VTB, the Winter Beast, the Devil, the Saint, and so on belong to the latter group. I think this is one of the reasons they are weaker than gods.
The other side of the coin is development "in breadth." At our level, this means collecting artifacts, accepting a legacy, discovering your legacy, and, ultimately, regular training. I don't know what the gods' equivalent of pull-ups is, but they definitely have one.

I don't think this is very clear anywhere. Everything that isn't corrupted has a spark of the Flame of Divinity. You are either part of the Flame or part of the Void from which Corruption spews. The Gods are the largest pieces of the Flame followed by the Daemons seems to be the reason for the difference in power. My headcanon so far is that the Path of Ascension is a process that kindles the Flame within you and increase it in some way. The Path of Corruption for NMs would be the opposite, it increases their connection to the Void.

If Asterion can use Saint Thane's powers over dreams to spread the plague faster then I don't see why Sunny can't do something similar with his powers.

He can use Nightmare on a massive scale on the population in certain Citadels such as Ravenclaw, Bastion or NQSC at night then he could use the Puppeteer Moth to plant that seed of doubt in everyone's dream.

And Nightmare could definitely put people of all ranks to sleep in a snap. He made hundreds of Great Creatures and a Cursed Demon slumber as a Transcendent. Granted that took months but they are much more powerful.

As a Supreme Terror it made a Supreme Titan like the FOK fell in a deep slumber in like less than an hour. He could definitely make the whole population sleep. This is why I think Nightmare is Sunny's most dangerous Shadow, more than Saint or Fiend and Slayer. Nightmare could clear like most REGIONS by itself. Serpent I think is also hella underused too.

Yeah with all the Supremes and sacred in sunnys arsenal, plus seven supreme titan Sunnys with weaver's lineages modifications the whole world along with Asterion or even Mordred can't overpower sunny at full power.

But at what cost? He'll have the entire world as a bunch of shades inside his domain. He'd be no better than Mordred or Asterion and just end up using everyone for his apotheosis

In three days the normal population would be dead. If they're masters or awakened, they could last something longer. They're still human, without eating or drinking, they'd die within a matter of time. The nigthmare creatures survive because they were high rank.

G3 makes Sunny and Nephis completely forget any way they had to deal with Asterion. He makes them as helpless as possible by doing nothing.
This arc will be much more interesting if Sunny and Nephis still a Saint, Because they have a clear reason for unable to do anything.
But now? As 2 Supreme Titan, With all Saints under their control, And entire human domain completely worshipping Nephis. How did they stop Asterion? By doing absolutely nothing, until it's too late.
