Chapter 2620: Sea Quest

The Night Garden continued to descend into the cold waters of the Stormsea. Sunny had allowed the dome of shadows to collapse into a torrent of flowing darkness and vanish, thus allowing Jet and the Saints of Night to see what was happening around the titanic ship.

It was a wondrous sight.

There did not seem to be anything standing in the way of water, and yet it failed to wash over the decks of the Night Garden, as if pushed away by an invisible barrier. Strangely enough, that made Sunny feel like he was a colossal aquarium. Of course, an aquarium was supposed to keep aquatic shapes of life alive on dry land, not the other way around.

"What is the opposite of an aquarium, though?"

A terrarium... it was probably a terrarium. His odd thoughts were interrupted by Jet, who glanced around with a wary expression on her face and said:

"We will proceed slowly. Be ready to summon that dome back if the Aegis begins leaking."

Their initial success did not guarantee safety. After all, there could be a limit to what the invisible barrier isolating the surface decks of the Night Garden from hostile environments could do. Beyond that, they did not only have water to worry about — there was also pressure, oxygen, and a dozen other things that had to be accounted for in order to ensure the safety of all passengers.

Personally, Sunny was sure that the Demon of Repose would have built and enchanted her ship properly, but he was all for taking all the necessary precautions. After all, daemons were different from people. Who knew if they had even needed to breathe or cared about not the weight of an entire ocean resting on their shoulders?

So, there was no harm in keeping a close eye on things.

Soon, Aether and Bloodwave departed to perform various checks, leaving Sunny and Jet alone on the bridge. They watched the water flow upward past the Night Garden in silence, both secretly haunted by the memories of the Tomb of Ariel.

The sea around them was red, but the deeper the Night Garden descended, the paler its morbid hue became. Less and less light could penetrate the great mass of water, as well, so their surroundings were growing dimmer. The grotesque remains of slain Nightmare Creatures drifted past them from time to time, sinking at their own speed.

After a while, the living ship was surrounded by utter darkness, shining with myriad lights in its embrace. The lanterns illuminating the Night Garden were the only source of light in the cold abyss, so, surrounded by their vibrant glow, it fell into the dark depths like a radiant nebula.

The only sounds in the dead silence of the deep sea were the quiet rustle of leaves and the soft whispers of wind that blew between the masts of the titanic ship.

Jet sighed lightly.

"At least there's wind. That is a good sign." The presence of wind indicated that the Night Garden was producing its own oxygen, probably absorbing it from the surrounding water. The carbon dioxide generated by millions of people breathing in its depths was probably being absorbed by the trees growing on the main deck... Which didn't really make sense, considering that there was no sun here. However, the living ship was known to have a mystical effect on all flora growing aboard it, so Sunny would not be surprised to learn that the groves on the surface decks of the Night Garden could thrive even in these conditions.

He himself had a tree that thrived in the darkness of the Forgotten Shore, after all, out there in the courtyard of the Nameless Temple.

In any case, checking to see if the air was not growing stale was one of the tasks Aether and Bloodwave were going to perform. Naeve, meanwhile, was busy monitoring the situation on the lower decks and in the cavernous holds of the living ship, where the passengers were hidden. Everything seemed to be going fine, at least for now. So, Sunny allowed himself to relax... but only a little.

Both he and Jet were still tense, keeping themselves in a state of battle readiness. After all, they did not know what problems the Night Garden could experience while descending into the dark depths of the Stormsea after decades of only sailing on its surface.

On top of that, there were external threats they could encounter, as well... and the nature of their environment dictated an entirely different approach to battle — one that was inherently disadvantageous for land predators like them.

Even if the descent proceeded without any accidents, though, what awaited them in the abyssal depths was the Eternal City, all the horrors populating it, and the unknown calamity that had slaughtered all the other nightmare creatures in the waters above them.

'How exciting...'

Time passed slowly.

But even after a long while... nothing seemed to happen.

The darkness of the surrounding waters had grown even more absolute. Then, it grew eerie and frightening.

Jet glanced around with a total lack of amusement on her pale face and leaned on her scythe, seemingly seeking comfort in the cold steel of its ghostly blade.

"Ah, I don't like this at all."

Sunny, however, was not inclined to agree. “I am quite happy, though.”

She looked at him and raised an eyebrow. He nodded to the eerie darkness outside the shimmering sphere of light produced by the Night Garden.

“I think we have more or less reached the depth where I gave up on pursuing Old Tom. The pressure was giving trouble to Naeve and Bloodwave back then, but do you feel anything now? No. The hull may be creaking a little, but it seems like the Night Garden is protecting its passengers from the weight of the sea, too.”

Jet smiled faintly.

"That's true."

Sunny lingered for a few seconds.

“Have you been to the Chained Isles before the war?"

Jet tilted her head a little.

"Not really. Why?"

He shrugged.

"It's just that diving this deep felt like experiencing the Crushing all over again. Not the most pleasant experience."

Of course, on the Chained Isles, enormous chains prevented islands from rising too high, so he had only ever suffered the most harmless extent of the Crushing. Its full wrath was far more devastating, capable of obliterating even the most powerful abominations.

The master of the Ivory Island wielded the Crushing as a Component now. If used as a weapon, it could decimate entire regions. If used as a shield, it could prevent even a god from reaching the heavenly island unscathed.

Sunny wanted to comment on how the pressure of the abyssal depths was similar to that, but then fell silent abruptly.

Out there, in the darkness beyond the light of the Night Garden...

A colossal tentacle slowly drifted in the cold void, moving past the descending ship in the distance.

It was oddly limp and still.

Noticing his expression, Jet frowned. “What's the matter?"

Sunny peered into the darkness for a while, silent.

Eventually, he responded in a quiet tone:

“I think it's Old Tom. It... it seems to be dead."

I feel like the Vile Thieving Bird would become good Shadow in the future. An aerial Shadow. As for terrestrial Shadows, there are four. It would be cool to have an aquatic Shadow. A massive, terror-inducing aquatic Shadow. Ik Serpent can just transform but still a proper depths dweller would be cool.

One of the contradictions the author presents is the concept of willpower. He expresses the strength of a being through its ability to impose its will on the world — the stronger the being, the greater its will. But in order to impose your will, you must be free. If Sunny were to become a slave, that would mean his will no longer belongs to him, as it would always be tied to Nephis’s will. Even his own shadows, like the “Saint” and the “Killer,” have their free will. We saw the Killer refuse Sunny’s commands and not act unless it chose to, while the Saint, as the author hinted, follows Sunny’s orders not because he controls her, but because it is in her nature. Even his shadows ultimately achieve freedom, either by becoming Shadow Creatures or by dissolving in the Shadow World.

    In other words:
The author is trying to say that true strength cannot be achieved through servitude, but through freedom. If Sunny’s will becomes bound to Nephis’s, then he will not be the strongest being as his path suggests, but merely a follower—while the central theme of his entire journey is about freeing himself and others from all restraints

The first half of the story was about that, post fateless it's about choosing your own chains, no one is truly free, which is a realization he made which you obviously skipped😑

I can’t accept the idea of turning him into a slave to someone who is supposed to be his equal. If the author’s intention was to use the concept of chains, then why is Sunny the only one bound by these chains in this relationship? Why don’t we see Nephis sacrificing something for the sake of this bond, as if it were one-sided?

Because it is. Don't try to twist into something it isn't, sunny has always been the one chasing Neph, and he can only do that by getting stronger. Getting his fate back is simply a means to an end, and he's struggling to get over that fact. Don't twist my words, Neph loves him back just as strongly, but the reason she doesn't have to sacrifice as much, is because sunny isn't her main goal, humanity is. She sacrifices for it everytime she uses her aspect, and her domain literally drowns her in all of their voices. Granted, the biggest reason that she is still sane right now is because of sunny, and hes only going to get more essential as they get stronger. Neph needs sunny just as much as sunny needs Neph.

neph isnt the main goal of sunny too, she was just stronger as awakened and sleeper so sunny wanted to catch up to her to be her equal but now he is literally stronger than her even without his shadows and shades. lol

and no its still 1 sided sunny will be the only one suffering if he choose to be slave again

It's like you only read half of what I said. Just because he's stronger now, doesn't automatically mean he's achieved his goal, he's still working with her to save humanity which is the main goal of their relationship. And speaking of, the point of their relationship is not what they sacrifice for eachother, its what they sacrifice for humanity which Neph has been doing constantly cuz of her domain. If sunny simply wasn't interested in Neph, he'd not be interested in getting his fate back. And we acting like neph being his master hasn't saved sunny like 3 times now

why is that you want sunny to be her slave, sure it saved him a few times, but he was robbed of his choice, thats the main thing, sunny says hes only gonna challenge the 5th nightmare after getting all the weaves, which means he'll get all the weaves before trying to retrieve his fate, i feel by then he'll be strong enough to alter the nightmare spell/terms of the shadow bond from servitude to something else, thats my working theory and hope, cause if Sunny goes back to a slave just for one sided love, where nephis puts her own goals above him which she has said, i won't be able to read the novel anymore

I disagree with you; there's no contradiction. Bondage doesn't kill willpower. People can have strong willpower and exert powerful influence even while in prison or as slaves. Not all slaves were constantly beaten, forced to obey, and so on. Slavery comes in different forms and degrees.
In ancient Rome, for example, they could be teachers, doctors, and so on.

I think he will get the "Broken Sword" as an Echo, or inherit its aspect
This is just my theory: the Weaver was never actually inhabiting Sunny himself, but rather the Broken Sword. When Sunny inherits the Shadow Weave, the will of the Broken Sword would try to take over Sunny. Of course, that won’t happen since we know Sunny is the protagonist — but it might succeed in taking control of one of his seven incarnations.
