Around Chapters 1750–1760, Li Fan begins his plan, creating countless avatars of himself (the “Children of Destiny”) and spreading them across the Mountains and Seas. The goal is to generate “variables” to break the universe’s infinite reincarnation cycle. Zhang Fan, one of these avatars, follows a unique path. He encounters the “Guests Who Would Become Gods” (the Fisherman, Zhenshiyin, etc.)—saints from past cycles who, after becoming “New Gods” and being restarted by the power of “Huan Zhen” (还真), retain only vague memories of being trapped in a cycle.

With their help, Zhang Fan discovers the truth: he is merely an avatar, a pawn in the game of a superior being. In an act of rebellion and self-discovery, he makes the radical decision to abandon the power borrowed from “Huan Zhen.” He forges his own path, absorbing the unique Daos of the Guests and becoming a Saint by his own merit, claiming an identity that is solely his.

Between Chapters 1760–1770, the climax of Zhang Fan’s arc occurs. He finally confronts his creator, a version of Li Fan (the “Original”). However, this is all a manipulation by the true Li Fan we know, who has already merged with the concept of “Huan Zhen” and is orchestrating everything from behind the scenes.

In the battle, Zhang Fan uses the Guests’ memories and Daos as an “anchor” to distinguish himself from the “Original,” preventing himself from being simply reabsorbed. At the crucial moment, he achieves the “impossible”: he devours the “Original” Li Fan, inheriting his memories and power, and becomes the one true Li Fan on the field—now bearing the name and identity of Zhang Fan.

After his victory, Zhang Fan finally understands the full picture: the original True God was trapped in an eternal cycle of death and rebirth. It was that God who brought the first Li Fan (Shan Fan), an “outsider,” into this universe as the only variable capable of breaking that cycle. The God’s aim was not only to be reborn but to end the suffering of the cycle forever, even if it meant His own annihilation.

However, Zhang Fan’s triumph is fleeting. Over the course of nearly ten chapters, with the help of the Guests Who Would Become Gods, he grows ever more powerful—able to destroy the Mountains and Seas with a single thought. Yet he discovers that in becoming the new “God” and absorbing everything, he is likewise doomed to decompose into an empty, lonely darkness, for the universe requires an “anchoring point” to exist. His fate mirrors that of the previous God.

In his final moments, realizing that his journey was only another step in the grand plan of the true Li Fan (who had been hidden all along within Huan Zhen), Zhang Fan uses his last power to ignite a “flame”—the creation of a new, independent universe called the “New Ark.” This New Ark is a kind of new world separate from the Mountains and Seas; it spawns a seed of Truth (the Dao of Discerning False from True). However, without the presence of a True God, it becomes no more than a fragile candle in a hurricane—the “True Void.” This “True Void” is the realm outside the Mountains and Seas, where the True God, the Guests Who Would Become Gods, and the New Ark are easily destroyed and trapped in an even worse eternal loop than the Mountains and Seas. Even the avatar Zhang Fan created to ‘protect’ the New Ark begged its origin for its own annihilation. Think about it: everyone inside this New Ark suffers an eternal loop that lasts only two breaths, or microseconds. Every moment they are reset and still vaguely remember it; only Zhang Fan’s avatar remembers fully, because he ‘controls’ the Truth of this new world. Thus, Zhang Fan let them die as a form of rest.

And then comes Zhang Fan’s end: tragic but noble. He sacrifices himself, succumbing to the darkness, but his existence as a “successful variable” proves to the true Li Fan (hidden all along as Huan Zhen) that the final plan is possible.

The true Li Fan, now fused with “Huan Zhen,” watches everything. He understands that his original benevolent self, Shan Fan (善凡), refused to take the final step to become God because it required the annihilation of all beings he loved. ([The first Li Fan, named Shan Fan, was the ‘original.’ He became stronger and more powerful—his power nearly equaling the original True God’s—yet he possessed compassion and kindness to all living beings. To become a new True God and replace the original, he would have to consume everything in the Mountains and Seas (all living beings, all Daos, everything), because all of it is generated and derived by the True God and eventually returns to Him.]) But the current Li Fan, forged by cruelty and logic, did not hesitate. He infiltrates the True God’s being during His final resurrection cycle and, over countless eons, replaces Him from within.

Finally, Li Fan becomes the new absolute God, breaking the cycle forever.

However, he finds himself in the same infinite loneliness. Although he is no longer in any cycle, only he and the eternal, infinite Void remain. Thus, after countless, countless years in the Void…

And so the novel ends with Li Fan—the hidden god—finding his true happiness by silently observing the new stories of a world he saved not with power, but with sacrifice—a final return to the kindness of Shan Fan. I really loved this ending; I only wish the author had explored more about that “void realm.” Are there more True Gods? Where is the land from which Li Fan came? I think he may have rushed to finish the novel because some readers felt it was dragging, etc.
