Realizing This Is A Wuxia World After Cultivating For 300 Years修仙三百年突然发现是武侠

I'd give this a solid 7/10. (at time of review, @ch76)

The first few chapters are undoubtedly the best- the story of this dude fleecing people by pretending to be an Immortal is kinda funny, and the character interactions and the whole vibe of it is pretty good. After he actually 'descends', it kinda starts to slowly fall off.

The plot is a bit slow paced and the writing can be pretty long-winded. Fortunately, the characters tend to be at least mildly interesting and the dialogue is good, and the TL is of a pretty high quality so you aren't bothered by it at first. The writing and world-building is above decent, and the slight mystery aspect you get, like 'what'll he do next? what's his move?' keeps you invested.

After that, though... or I guess after 50 chapters, it just really drags. The characters aren't diverse or interesting enough to keep me hooked, which is a pretty common problem these 'I'm an OP guy in a weak world' novels have, since the people around them to be devout followers or enemies, leading most interactions to be either 'shock and obedience and awe' or 'hatred and fear and anger', and very little in-between. Character voices can begin to meld together, though considering the cast of this novel is so far pretty small, that's not a big problem here.

A more comedic tone, with the MC retaining more of his original personality from the start of the novel, would have certainly helped everything flow better and made me more interested.

The plot is okay, though! I'm not sure it stands up on its own, but it's still above-average from what I've come to expect from these novels. I'm certainly interested to see what happened to his sort-of 'disciples', and what the is like. There are supposedly more than 500 chapters of this, and while it's unlikely the story has reached that point even in the raws if the current pace continues, I'm kinda curious if our boi might end up in actual high-level Xuanhuan world at some point. The mystery of the system, with it describing this place as incredibly dangerous, is interesting as-well, even if the hook of it is so far away it doesn't add much for the time being.

I quite like how he figures out cultivation through other's techniques, and his style of doing things is nice- he's not a whimpering coward, at least not yet, but best of all he isn't some arrogant blowhard or mass murderer and neither is he trying to hide for no reason.

It's a fun read, but hard to binge. I found myself skipping paragraphs after about 60 chapters in, and at chapter 76, I'm putting this on hold for the time being. I'll likely come back to it after it builds a little, since the fact that with this thing's pace catching up won't bring me any satisfaction over any of the current arc dampens my enthusiasm to read it.

I'd totally recommend it- read about ~20 to 30 chapters, and if you like it, you'll probably like the way this goes.

On one hand, this seems stupidly interesting.
On the other hand, I find wuxia pretty boring...
