The Age of Mechs has arrived! Unfortunately, Ves Larkinson lacked the genetic aptitude to become a famed mech pilot. Fighting against his fate, he studied mech design in order to express his love for mechs in a different way and make his father proud.

When Ves graduated from college, he returned to a new but empty boutique. His dad had disappeared. Left with a small, newly founded mech workshop… Collapse

Define 'better' as that's a bit vague. Ves is definitely an anti-hero with obvious flaws and his journey has many ups and downs. It's also well-known that the author has a thing for dominant women and that shows in the story so make of that what you will.

I’m on chapter 1000+ and damn this one is a slow burner how in the world are these states alive sorry but if you ever look at a war torn country that can’t stop fighting and how they say the war is so bad there is no way these countries don’t end up like Germany in WW2 out of resources people and spirit. Simply put these states can only function in a fantasy (a book) still annoys me put the spoiler here just in case you’ve not read about the war arc

Well, you have to be aware these states comprise of many planets and solar systems. They won't be lacking in resources even with regular wars. Also mech pilots only comprise of 3% of the population due to genetic aptitude so there's a hard limit on the amount of troops.

Anyways good luck reading the story. It only gets bigger and better the longer you read.

Although I can’t say for certain how it plays out in real life or even in the novel, having more resources would only really help(regarding sustainablity) if either (1) you couldn’t fully utilize all of them, or (2) your enemies had significantly fewer resources. In the context of intergalactic wars, they would likely take much longer overall, yet feel shorter relative to their massive scale. Even if you're not literally burning through planet-sized quantities of resources or outright destroying them, the consumption rates would still be insane. The only way such a conflict could sustain itself is if the warring factions were holding back significantly.
Funnily enough, our best guesses for how intergalactic wars would play out in real life are shaped largely by what happens at the very beginning. It’s highly likely that the first to strike would hold a decisive advantage, perhaps even securing outright victory, as such advanced civilizations would likely possess weapons capable of effortlessly destroying entire planets. With such overwhelming power, these conflicts might not be prolonged wars of attrition but rather swift and catastrophic events, decided in moments.

Interestingly, the sheer destructive capability of these civilizations could lead to a paradox: the more powerful their weapons, the less likely they are to engage in open war. Knowing that any conflict could result in mutually assured destruction might push factions to focus on alternative strategies. Instead of outright battles, wars could take the form of technological sabotage, economic manipulation, or covert operations, where the goal is to gain an edge without provoking total annihilation. (Quite similar to what we have nowadays)

In this sense, intergalactic wars might look less like epic space battles and more like a high-stakes game of chess, fought across the vastness of the cosmos. Whether through preemptive strikes or shadowy maneuvering, the survival of entire civilizations could hinge on strategy, timing, and restraint.
Which is a complete contrast imo to what most scfi pictures them as.

Number 1 is pretty much the case in the story as a large part of using mechs is to de-escalate conflicts. There are also organizations that overlook the entirety of humanity and have banned destructive actions that'd destroy a planet. The most powerful organizations generally have smaller conflicts and skirmishes like you've mentioned, both seen and unseen to the public. Even between completely hostile entities there is a measure of restraint as overally destructive behaviours will simply reduce the rewards gained after the end of the conflicts.

Another thing to consider is that a running theme throughout the story involves using wars as a method to invigorate a species and unleash their full potential. More often than not these aren't real wars in the truest sense where one party seeks to completely destroy the other. Of course if there's a massive disparity in power between 2 entities, it's a given the weaker side will have to give significantly more or be straight up annexed.

There can only be total destruction if one state is significantly more powerful than the other and thats why in this novel they are divided into tiers of sorts, their weapons are restricted heavily and even tech used is restricted. to top it all the people in charge are basically doing a massive human experiment to yield and train as many ace mech pilots and designers as possible using these wars thats to say they will always appear to be fighting but will not exterminate the enemy states. basically if any state can still be completely defeated with such restrictions in place.... it doesnt deserve to be a state.

Okay, just out of curiosity, what is the author even writing in this novel for it to be over 6,000 chapters.?
Another thing: is this worth reading for anyone other than fans? Please let me know. I tried to pick it up a few years ago but had to drop it because of some stuff.

It's definitely a book worth reading. It only gets better and more epic the longer you read.

As for how a story can last for 6000+ chapters, it's because it details an epic adventure spanning the universe where the MC starts from humble beginnings and continuously rises up the ladder towards the top. It's actually quite easy to divide the story in 1000 chapter chunks since quite often a major shift in the story occurs at those points.

1-1000 is the start of his career and largely shapes the personality he has in the future
1000-2000 MC has become a more mature mech designer and businessman at this point
2000-3000 the beginnings of MC's own faction
3000-4000 more adventures in a new location
4000-5000 MC and faction obtains astounding success
5000-6000 major plot twist that is a prelude to more
6000+ centers around the biggest war in the story yet

Tried not to spoil anything while still showing a clear overview of the story so far. The author mentioned he wanted the story to be at least 10,000 chapters long and it's kind of easy to see how he'd achieve that.

Wow, that was way more detailed than I expected. It's cool to break it down like that. The thing with fat novels is, when I try to binge-read them, I just get tired of it at some point. So, what I do is read a few chapters and then switch to another book. I think that works for me. It might take a while to catch up, but I don't mind that.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I think I'm gonna pick it up again.

the beauty of this book is that author is familiar with all cultivation tropes and the world setting suddenly changes to xianxia after 5000+ chapter but author coverts xianxia elements into sci-fi.
the only problem is that MC gains too much power for plot reason, if you look it from no of chapters perspective it's slow but in the timeline of story his growth is super fast and gain random boosts all the time, in retrospective for comparison he grows from ordinary rock sharper in a small illiterate tribe in Somalia to Vice Director of fictional United Nations Government with real power and authority while at the same time becoming weapons manufacturer in France.

I don't think it's too unusual. Using your analogy, imagine if that rock sharper(?) had a home remedy that cured cancer. Ves all the way at the beginning as an Apprentice had the miraculous ability to create souls from almost nothing. This uniqueness as well as his System is what allowed him to have such an enormous advantage compared to everyone else.

For background, I've just caught up and finished reading the most recent chapter when I've written this comment.

It is not a cultivation-system novel to be frank. I know it was framed like that and it seemed like the MC is gonna be an OP god that massacres through everything like some sort of sketchy and/or edgy MC from most cultivation novels/mangas, but no.

To oversimplify how the character is like, imagine a person that CAN win an presidential election, but does NOT have the skills to be president.

He himself KNOWS that he isn't skilled enough nor have the right personality to be a responsible and capable president, but he gained the system which can help him quickly but can also turn him into a puppet leader, or can help him while he develops his personality and capability with minimal corruption from the system but SLOWLY, EERIELY, SNAIL PACINGLY SLOW.

Which path did he take? The slow method. He could have been a puppet in a dictatorship country, but chose to slowly climb up the ranks and slowly build up his skills and personality with the system as a boost rather than a crutch.

This allowed him to develop his personality and capabilities, albeit slower than most OP MCs from more common mangas and novels, he build a close circle of people that he can trusts with most of his critical secrets and at the same time trusts him, and an organization that is slowly growing less dependant towards but more often than not will support and trust his judgement due to his achievements and how he has consistently proven that he can be trusted (rather than a bunch of followers with blind trust to an OP MC like in most mangas/novels) and expand his capabilities.

Early in the novel, he struggles with his weakness, helplessness, and his career
, similar to a normal person. Unlike some random OP MC from a manga or novel, he struggles like a normal person, albeit with more crutches (the system) than most people.

He eventually grows stronger, his career trajectory gets better, and he eventually starts an organization. With this growth comes bigger, harder, more complicated challenges that he can't always solve the way readers would. Most of this problems you can more or less consider to him not knowing he's some sort of OP MC, because whether you like it or not, it isn't healthy or normal for most people to suddenly think they are soon-to-be-gods of sort.

Eventually he marries a wife who he doesn't always agree, (just like most people) but synergizes well with. (albeit he doesn't fully figure it out well yet until a dozen chapters)

His ego starts to suffer from the ungodly amount of benefits from the system and eventually does slip up and put himself and his organizatoon in a danger that may very well snowball into a catastrophe which he does patch up (note how I didn't say fix.) by settling his prior relationships and obligations and moving to a different area
in hopes of coming back stronger and fixing the problem.

In his journey to a new area, he struggles with some of his past enemies
that he didn't quite settle yet, becoming a father, his system shenanigans,
and managing an organization without wanting the responsibilities but wanting the power.

He eventually does get a sort-of winning formula and eventually gets to the new area.
From there, he goes on another care-free adventure with his org, finds cool and powerful things here and there, encounters a bunch of powerful guys, bla bla bla, and he eventually grows enough strength (through his org), reputation (through his org and career), and influence (through his career/innovations).

Where an even eventually cuts off this area from the rest of humanity and plunges them deeper into a foreign territory.

These developments puts him on a spotlight to be seen by even higher powers than he usually handles.

This puts him on a relatively underdog position again. He tries to bide his time and he slowly and finally solves most of his leadership/reponsibility problem and tries to grow at his own pace threading a balance between being lowkey and gaining power, which he constantly fails due to the temptation and needing to be stronger from an upcoming danger
and a looming even greater danger

His pursuit for power and the results of his innovation in attempts to protect and empower his org and family makes him highkey. This results to higher powers pushing him to a position where he can influence humanity greatly. This capability and his now more responsible (I said "more responsible" as in compared to the past) personality results in him burdening himself with problems plaguing not just his family and clan, but also the rest of humanity, while at the same time dealing with the attention, perks, and dangers of rapidly ascending to a stronger position
    .

Basically, the story from 0-6018 mark is if a normal person was burdened with the capability to gain powers and the risks involved with it and the perks, risks, and dangers involved with growing and gaining higher powers.
