Xu Qing lives in a world where the weak are the prey of the strong, and every day is a fight to survive.

The aura of a god has polluted the entire world, including the resources necessary to practice cultivation. As a result, cultivators risk mutation and death when they try to become more powerful.

Xu Qing’s goals are simple: he wants to survive, and he wants to find his lost family. He lives in brutal, ruthless, and chaotic circumstances, but he encounters good people that become his close friends.

He is not crafty and cowardly like Bai Xiaochun. He is not clever and greedy like Meng Hao.

He is his own person, and if you want to find out what he’s like… you’ll have to start reading!

***

Official blurb translated from Chinese:

All living beings in heaven and earth are guests in a tavern. The timescape is also an old customer.

The difference between life and death is like the difference between dreaming and waking. Even years of study might not reveal the truth of such complex transformations.

What awaits on the other side of life and death? What surpasses heaven and earth? What lies beyond the timescape?

Fellow Daoists, I just had a realization—the biggest difference between Wang Lin from Renegade Immortal and Xu Qing from Beyond the Timescape is this: everyone’s out to kill Wang Lin, while Xu Qing has the full support of humanity behind him.

If only more peak novels like Renegade Immortal,Lord of the Mysteries, Pursuit of Truth, Beyond Timescape, etc., were adapted into Donghuas—instead of the usual action-only stuff like Perfect World—we might finally enter a true golden era of Donghua.

Let’s face it: half the popular Donghuas out there are basically just "cultivate, flex, slap a young master, repeat." The action's flashy, sure—but the plot? You could sum it up in a meme: “Bro got disrespected → Bro got mad → Bro got OP.” That’s the whole arc.

Now look at Renegade Immortal—a slow-burn masterpiece with actual philosophy, emotional depth, and character evolution. And surprise surprise... it shot to #1, surpassing second-tier action Donghuas like Perfect World and Shrouding the Heavens. Why? Because people are hungry for stories with meaning, not just endless face-slapping tournaments.

Imagine if Lord of the Mysteries or Beyond Timescape got full-fledged, well-budgeted adaptations. The storytelling potential is insane—mystery, horror, existentialism, multi-layered plots. But no, studios keep betting on another MC with a tragic past and a cheat system.

At this rate, it’s like giving Michelin-star recipes to a street food vendor and asking for fine dining.

Donghua has so much potential beyond just action. If studios start adapting real story-driven epics, the genre won’t just compete with anime—it’ll redefine it.

Fellow daisies, enlighten me on whether I should pick up this journey again. I read upto the point where he \\spoilers\\ plit? Himself into the godpath and immortal path and left for the 5th ring? Immortal world which kinda threw me off and turned my interest down to 0 because I thought he’d forge a new path, fusing both immortal and god becoming an immortal god but then he suddenly became “enlightened” that that path cannot work or something, even though he became stronger than most beings by sealing gods within his immortal path therefore fusing their powers.\\endspoiler\\

Ok idk how to actually put these in spoiler button since it’s been a while since I used ranobes

Brother that’s in the other translated version of this novel “Outside of Time” and the way to use spoiler tag is pressing the button next to the quotation mark (“) above the comment box and put your spoiler in between the two []. You should edit your comment quick if you can because that’s ahead of what’s in this translated version of the novel

Honestly kinda disappointed, my reasons are

    1. Er gen is making it seem like the whole human race is a saint

    2. MC is racist, yeah you heard me right

    3. MC is too perfect

Novel started great, but it changed to something else, i know about character development and all but why did the mc personality change opposite to what it was before. That’s not the mc I started this novel with (i am in chapter 839).
It’s kinda funny because all the reasons i listed are major difficulties i face with most chinese novels

      That's not the case.

You have a very skewed perspective.
The human race in Wanguu is a relatively minor race.

The other races have gods, and beings with high prowess. The only reason humans are relatively well off is the because of the sword holders. There's an existence at the peak of the sword holders that deters other races and gods.

Xu Qing treats all races relatively equally. He certainly has love for his race, but when there's benefit, he slaughters anyone.
I haven't seen Xu Qing purposefully target any race. Except there's a general war, or he targetted first.

Heck, one of the potential love interests isn't human.

Are we reading the same novel?
1.) The human race used dawning suns (nuclear weapons) to maintain the status quo
2.) The MC treats a snake girl as a little sister (what tammytrades said), is friends with a phoenix, Captain doesn't even know what species/race he is at this point, Master 7th picked up a random student that seemed promising (pretty sure this was a grue? or a species that wasn't human)
3.) Sure, Xu Qing is described as beautiful, but he started as a murderhobo in a slum that eventually found kindship and family with Captain and his master (he goes around stirring shit/plotting with captain, idk how this is a perfect human being)

Addressing the personality shift: His personality at the start was molded by the circumstances he was in (you read up to chapter 839) you should know that he reminisces his parents and thinks about Master Bai quite early in the novel. Hell, you could tell that he was more than a psycho with a knife from his interactions with Sergeant thunder
Xu Qing's personality didn't turn around 180degrees, idk you haven't realized this even though you read so much, but the "personality switch" Xu Qing has is much better described as him finding his humanity again (The current Xu Qing that found brotherhood with Captain is basically what he was before the novel + tainted by the circumstances of Reverend Ancient)

          1. Hence my point, the human race is not weak and definitely not saints. They have Dawning Suns and are not reluctant to use them. In fact, the issue isn’t their strength but the narrative’s constant glorification of humanity as inherently righteous. There’s also the constant portrayal of every other race as being out to get humanity (even those weaker than them), which, let’s be real, isn’t very realistic. But it’s a novel, so I understand that.

          2. I think I explained this in my previous comment.

          3. I get your point, but I was trying to say that the MC has strong plot armor. Please refer to my last comment for more on this.

          4. This is more of a personal perspective, different people will have different reactions to this. for me, the shift in Xu Qing’s personality often feels forced, as if the author is steering the character in a new direction to fit the story’s themes. Yes, Xu Qing does reminisce about his parents and Master Bai early on, which hints at his humanity. However, the depth of his personality in the early chapters is overshadowed by his cold, pragmatic survivalism. The sudden transition to a more sentimental, self-reflective persona feels forced and he sometimes transitions back to his pragmatic self making it seem inconsistent, especially when his actions remain heavily biased toward humanity.

English is not my first language, so please forgive any mistakes.

You must be in the early chapters; you’ll understand my perspective once you reach the later parts of the story.

The human race is not a minor race, in fact, it’s a powerful one, just not the strongest. You mentioned yourself that there exists a force capable of deterring Gods. Weakness is relative when compared to the top races. There are countless races weaker than humans, and some even serve them. Continue reading to understand this better.

When I said the MC is “perfect,” I was referring to the fact that he never loses in fights. Even when facing an enemy who is a once-in-a-thousand-years genius, 2-3 major levels above him, he always emerges victorious in every unbelievable situation. He always seems to gain some mysterious power-up just before fighting an otherwise insurmountable enemy often introduced within 10 chapters or less.

As for calling the MC “racist,” I admit that might be too strong a term. Perhaps “biased” is more accurate. For instance, if I recall correctly, the MC was willing to massacre an entire race because they captured humans. While they did so out of survival, his reaction was to annihilate them. Don’t get me wrong , I’m not saying the MC should be righteous. In fact, I enjoy unfettered protagonists. However, it’s the mentality after his actions that bothers me. He killed them because they were nonhumans, while helping humans simply because they were human.

You could argue he was avenging a little girl, but think about it: the soldiers he killed, did they not also have families? If memory serves, he later sacrificed the surviving members of the race, including innocent ones who were simply following orders. The issue here is his mentality: humans are right, nonhumans are wrong.

This bias is fine in itself, but what bothers me is that the MC considers himself “fair.” He genuinely believes the nonhumans were wrong for trying to survive. If he had openly admitted, “I don’t care, I killed them because I can” or “I hate nonhumans for daring to capture humans,” I would have accepted that. But it’s the self-justification of fairness behind his actions that doesn’t sit well with me. It was a matter of survival of the fittest. The nonhumans captured or killed humans because they were weak. He, in turn, killed them because he had the power to do so. That’s “might makes right,” not fairness. Neither the nonhumans nor the humans were inherently wrong it was just a clash of survival. We see another situation where he considered sparing someone but ultimately killed them after finding out it was a nonhuman.
I might get some details wrong because i read this chapters a long time ago, but all this events did happen

Sorry for the long note, but I hope this clarifies my point. The MC’s bias toward humanity isn’t inherently wrong, but his refusal to acknowledge it is. This becomes more evident in the chapters that follow.

I’d love to hear any other thoughts or conflicting theories. Thank you!

I haven't read the novel but I have an idea about "The Human Race is a Saint"
For a Chinese author, if the novel's setting were on Earth, he would praise China to the point that it would become the world's saint.
If the novel was in another world, and the conflict was with other races, it would praise the human race (which has the three Chinese views, or at least the Chinese heritage).
