【From the author of 'Tales of Herding Gods'!】

My grandfather is very peculiar.

Every day, he lights incense for himself and eats candles in front of his own ancestral tablet. The villagers are all terrified of my grandfather.

I’m scared of him too.

Later, I realized they weren’t afraid of him—they were afraid of me.

My grandfather is also afraid of me.

My name is Chen Shi. Chen as in “honest,” and Shi as in “sincere.” Collapse

    I'm like 40/50 chapters in and I just can't

Reading one chapter can both be extremely cool but feels like it's 15 chapters and not in a good way. It feels like there is a ton of padding but at the same time there is no padding whatsoever. You actually need to read all of it

This a true gem. The world of this story is brutal and gruesome. Death and corruption is commonplace. Horrors appear at night, from huge floating heads to invisible neck snappers. Coincided with the humor in this novel, scenes feel darkly amusing. However there is not a cold-hearted, slaughtering main character. There are plenty of interesting fight scenes, unique characters, heartwarming chapters, and the world is heavily steeped with chinese folklore. The main character is a kind-hearted grandson, growing as they learn the mysteries of the world. This is not a cookie cutter horror/cultivation novel but a meticulous slowburning story. Note: the mtl is for some reason much more detailed- do compare.

BOTI translations... I don't want to read this. Their tl are fine in the beginning but becomes way worse as they leave everything to ai.

I will wait for poison testers nose

They’ve 9 pages of translated novels, which would be absurd if the translators were human sigh
Out of all that, I can only recommend Players, Please Board The Train and 1888: Memoirs of an Unconfirmed Creature Hunter and I Got My Cheat Skill by Acting My Way into a Horror Protagonist Role (japanese-level title length I know)

I hate to say it, but after a certain point it ceases to be BOTI and gets even worse. Genuinely turns into unreadable, totally unedited AI-translated slop: character names don't stay consistent—don't even stay recognizable, unless you infer heavily based on context—sentence patterns degenerate into staccato the farther into the chapter you get, and it's pretty much impossible to follow what's going on. It's certainly not pleasurable, even if you can figure things out.

The story is actually quite good, but it's just not worth reading in this miserable condition. Hopefully somebody else eventually gives it a better treatment; I don't think I can bear to return to it until then.

Yeah boti has good taste in novels but they somehow put even less effort in than using a straight mtl.

I don't have a very positive impression of BOTI, but at some point another group takes over and it's actually much much worse. I don't know what chapter the transition is at exactly—maybe 60 or 80—but it's very very bad.

Thats because BOTI only edits the first 50 odd chapters. Then they just post unedited MTL. You're honestly better off just using gemini + a word/term replacement plugin.

I honestly find the MTL is just as good as the regular... Maybe I've sunk too far into this path, maybe I'm wrong... Or maybe it's the world that's wrong

It wasnt terrible per say, it was pretty good, but eventuelly dragged on into infinity if i remember correctly(i think it also had typical problems and inconsitencys etc, but am somewhat unsure how much they where part of it),and realy wasnt why i read that novel in the first place. If it follows that novels quality wise every chapter of this novel will likely still be good, the problems only started appearing i think around 500-900 or so, that realy broke me).

Any fellow Daoists know where I can find a better translation, from chapter 100 upwards it becomes barely readable, the story is nice but the translation strangles it in the cradle

This would be a 9/10 were the MC not an naive (at times) child. Still, a damn good horror thriller, just that the main character is a major source of frustration later on.

    7/10, dropped at ch 90.
