On an ordinary day, the world jumped off a cliff—thus began an endless doomsday trial, and the world started receiving insane version updates!

From the initial zombie outbreak version to global mutation, eerie resurrections, divine awakenings, multiverse invasions, and even the descent of the abyss… every version brought unique opportunities and powers. Powerhouses from previous versions could become helpless weaklings in the next.

But before each version update, Li Xuan got a sneak peek at the inside info. Riding the wave of updates, he seized the 60-second window during the zombie version to grab a transformation ability, hoarded supplies, and recruited the future Empress.

In the global mutation version, he secured the strongest support and the Beast Emperor. In the eerie resurrection version, he mastered the Empress and ended all supernatural terrors!

When the gods returned, they saw a pair of eternal golden eyes. The once-insignificant ant had evolved into a god-slayer, standing tall above all, shouting:

“You’re the challengers now!” Collapse

I have to be honest; "World Refresh" started off with a glimmer of potential. At first glance, it looked like a promising post-apocalyptic story — a crumbling world, an evolving protagonist, and a faint glimmer of humanity struggling to survive. The opening gave off that gritty survival vibe that usually hooks me, but as the chapters piled on, that spark was quickly drowned under a never-ending flood of monsters, absurd world logic, and some of the most brain-dead characters I’ve read in a long while.

The biggest offender? The monster galore. What started as a grounded apocalypse with the occasional mutation quickly devolves into a kaiju circus. The MC literally turns into some kind of Godzilla hybrid, complete with scales, claws, and a transformation sequence that would make Toho proud. The first time it happens, you think, “Alright, cool power-up.” By the fifth time, you’re ready to hurl. The novelty evaporates fast, replaced with pages upon pages of descriptions about monstrous forms, claws ripping flesh, and tail smash attacks. It’s less “post-apocalyptic survival” and more “Monster Hunter fanfic gone wrong.”

Then there are the female leads — or should I say, background NPCs. The two supposed FMLs are practically non-existent, mentioned here and there but never developed. They exist more as narrative decoration than actual characters. There’s no emotional development, no chemistry, and certainly no reason to care whether they live, die, or turn into snack-sized side characters for the next monster battle.

Now, let’s talk about humanity — or rather, the absolute lack of it. Every single person in this novel is an idiot. And I don’t mean garden-variety dumb; I mean terminally brain-dead. I’ve seen people make poor choices in apocalypse fiction before, but this is next-level. Everyone acts with zero self-preservation instinct. They pick fights they can’t win, betray each other for no reason, and treat every situation like a speedrun toward their own deaths. I’m a pretty nihilistic person; I genuinely believe humanity as a whole would find a way to screw itself over even if the apocalypse handed us an instruction manual. But World Refresh manages to take that cynicism and multiply it tenfold. These people are selfish, mean-spirited, egocentric to the point of parody, and incapable of the most basic cooperation. The result isn’t tension — it’s exhaustion.

And it’s not just the people who don’t make sense — the world itself doesn’t either. The setting bends over backwards to justify random spectacle. We get endless rainstorms that last for days, then an eternal day where the sun apparently refuses to set. Sure, it’s fantasy. Sure, it’s the apocalypse. But even in a fantastical setting, some internal logic should hold up. Instead, you’re left staring at the screen thinking, “How the hell would that even work?” The result is an immersion-breaking mess where the world feels less like a real place and more like the author’s sandbox for random set-pieces.

By the time you reach the 70s chapters, the cracks in the writing start showing. Paragraphs repeat, sentences double up, and some chapters read like the import process itself glitched. I can’t tell if this was an editing oversight or a broken upload, but either way, it kills the rhythm. The writing, which was serviceable early on, starts to crumble under repetition and sloppy formatting.

The worldbuilding? Barely there. Cities and towns are named like someone’s placeholder notes — City Z, City G, City H. You have no sense of geography, no clue how far places are from each other. One chapter they’re in City Z, the next they’re magically in City K, mowing down another horde of zombies and conveniently meeting another suicidal batch of survivors. Everything blurs together.

Character development? Forget it. The MC doesn’t grow; he mutates — literally. The author seems to believe that getting new powers equals character depth. The more zombies he kills, the stronger he gets, and apparently, that’s all the “development” we need. There’s no introspection, no moral conflict, not even a flicker of human emotion left once the monster grind begins. It’s mechanical and soulless.

In short, World Refresh is what happens when a decent apocalypse premise gets buried under excessive monster transformations, dumb character decisions, and zero emotional or narrative depth. Everything interesting about survival and morality in a dying world is drowned out by mindless gore and logic-defying set-pieces. It’s loud, hollow, and exhausting.

Writing quality starts decent, tanks later. Characters don’t exist. Worldbuilding is lazy. Pacing is chaotic. Logic is missing in action.

If you enjoy kaiju rampages and don’t care about plot or people, maybe you’ll find something to like. For everyone else, this one’s a hard skip.

Rating: 2.2/5 (D-) — Too much monster, not enough mind.

This is decent but it's genuinely just a diamond covered in shit. It could have been so much better if the author wasn't so fixated on sex. Every man acts like a hormonal horny teen and every woman only thinks about selling their bodies. There are ofcourse exceptions but very few. Also even the mc isn't completely immune from this. This story is after all a harem. His two teammates are both supposedly incredibly beautiful women, one of them being a recently born snake that transformed into a human.

The fixation on sex is incredibly annoying and unrealistic. For example 2 minutes into the apocalypse, one dude was already talking about taking women. The zombies haven't even cleared out yet, let alone finding shelter or food. In another case, a dude that had very little food was offering it to woman just to sleep with him once. Their priorities are so twisted and unrealistic.

Might be dropped. Source page hasn't updated for over a month now (at ch167). Unfortunate as it's a fun binge novel.

Review: 100 chapters in and I can confidently say this is one the best Chinese apocalypse power fantasy novels on this site. Good ruthless Mc who is cunning and unaffected by beauties. Antagonist and side characters feel real and have interesting motives. They can make decisions that feel random but in character. Interesting world building and many mysteries. Overall - 8.5 out of 10 / Above Average and Good at times.

Surprisingly quite good. Good start and a really fun ruthless mc.

Hint, not really a spoiler: When he encountered an auntie, she tried to make him find her grandson and when he refused, she started yelling at him. He then proceeded to pick up a brick and throw it her twice with one of them hitting her in the face. Hilarious.
