I found myself drifting into an Eastern-style romance fantasy novel that I didn’t even finish reading.

And to make things worse, I became the younger brother of the female protagonist who didn’t even exist in the original story.

My motto in life is to work as little as possible while earning as much as I can.

Seol Tae Pyeong, a third-rate warrior, whose sole goal is just to live comfortably.

But from a certain day onward,

I monopolized the love of the Princess Consort of Cheongdo Palace.

“Let’s survive.”

Nothing is too much.

When it comes to survival. Collapse

Great comedic romance novel, emphasis on the “comedy” part and less so on the “romance” part.

Pretty light hearted read with ‘some’ intrigue, though most is othershadowed by the comedy aspect.

Good chapter length too, so recommended for a relaxing read.

I've noticed that, 99.99% of these "ruthless" main characters are the same and have the personality of a piece of cardboard, that being none at all. And yet people on these web-novel sites eat that shit up, it would be one thing if it was just one story, but they are all the exact same thing. This generation is truly cooked.

You find them uninteresting, fair enough. But not every character needs to bleed emotions to be compelling.
Not every story spoon-feeds emotional drama just to hold your attention. Ruthless protagonists reflect a harsh world, one you might not relate to, but others find depth in them.
God forbid people enjoy something that doesn’t cater to your particular taste.

Not sure why you quoted me out of the comment chain, but I think you're misunderstanding my point.

Sure, a ruthless protagonist can have depth. There are plenty of stories with ruthless protagonists that have depth and personalities; the First Law series and the A Song of Ice and Fire series are chief examples, but to have depth, I'd argue emotions are almost necessary, because no matter how many middleschoolers online will claim otherwise, they are integral to the human experience. My critique is mainly aimed at the current Asian web-novel sphere. Sure, you can like them; I like some too; otherwise, I wouldn't be on this site, but it's pretty inarguable at this point that the vast majority of it is copy-and-paste trash that is used to fill time before the reader will forget they ever even read it.

Anyways, back to the actual point, I was mainly pointing out how these low-effort stories get praised simply by virtue of having a "ruthless" protagonist and being real, despite having no actual reflection on reality and despite the author putting absolutely no effort into any other part of the story. And then these same people will also do the opposite of tearing down a story and calling it trash because an MC dares to be kind and completely ignore every other facet of it because the MC doesn't fit their myopic worldview.

Anyways, long comment, at least for a Ranobes comment section, so I should probably stop here.

Fair, i see where you're coming from now. i only replied because the way your original comment was worded came off more like a blanket dismissal, calling this generation 'cooked' and most stories 'copy paste trash' sounded more like frustration. criticism is fair, but generalizations can overlook the nuance.

i dont disagree that a lot of web novels follow the same formula, or that emotion adds depth. but i still think you are mixing up a lack of emotional display with a lack of depth. not all characters need to express emotion openly to feel real, some are shaped by silence, restraint or cold logic, especially in brutal settings.

and yes, a lot of web novels follow trends and are low effort, no argument there. but thats true in every medium when quantity gets rewarded. people enjoy different things, even if its just filler for them and that doesnt always mean the work is trash.

and btw, i quoted you cuz sometimes i dont get notifications in a reply chain.

Who in the world would look for a reason not to pull a drowning person out of the water right in front of him?

If you save them and they start asking for more, then one can simply thrash them later. To calculate gains and losses before even offering help is the act of the weak and cowardly.

This is the type of mc in this novel

I don't understand why people criticize protagonists like these, yet praise soulless, malevolent main characters.

Same bro, why is it a problem for an MC to have a semblance of moral.

Don't worry I poison tested it till chapter 66, read the manhwa too, it's not that bad honestly, it's about upright mc where he has to save the world and how he tries his best to survive ancient times with all the politics and with the princess consorts falling in love with him which might cause his execution... Well if you want a small taste of the novel just read the manhwa. I might have spoilt it a bit but you will understand after reading why I said save the world

Harem, focused on getting women. Except that he is *just friends* with the women for now since they are part of emperor's harem (death for mc if he tried)
the novel's story is almost entirely centered on the women (some manner of princesses or nobility) that grow closer to the protagonist and quickly fall in love with him after he's resolved some trouble of theirs.

For now, there hasn't yet been any actual intimacy or such happening, but it may happen in the future
