In the remote wilderness, amidst the whispering winds and ancient trees, Song You, a wanderer from a foreign land, treads a path of solitude with no intention of becoming a celestial being.

For two decades, Song has immersed himself in the rigorous discipline of mountain cultivation under the guidance of his master. Unexpectedly, his master instructs him to descend from the secluded mountains and explore the world of demons, monsters, and the myriad facets of human existence.

Song embarks on a journey to witness the diverse landscapes and encounter the supernatural, seeking out renowned mountains and mighty rivers rumored to be the abodes of true immortals – the epitome of authentic spiritual cultivation.

Little does Song realize that his quest will lead him far and wide, traversing the vast expanse of the land. In a surprising turn of events, he discovers that the celestial being he seeks is none other than himself.

As Song journeys through the bustling regions of the north and the serene landscapes of the south, he unravels the mysteries of his own existence. The people he meets, the challenges he faces, and the secrets he uncovers become integral parts of his transformative journey.

The pursuit of enlightenment becomes an odyssey of self-discovery, and the boundaries between mortal and immortal blur. Collapse

Unintended Immortality is a calm and slow paced journey through China by the talking cat Lady Calico and her pet Daoist priest Song You. While there is an overarching plot that develops, the general framing device is that the Daoist needs to come down from the mountain for at least 20 years, and just see where that takes him, and that first takes him to rescuing an unsanctioned cat god and agreeing to reform it as a good Daoist. After that, the novel is mostly a slice-of-life, with Song You and Lady Calico just existing, walking, bantering, seeing the sights, and cultivating meditatively. Occasionally there are some wondrous spectacles involving gods, demons, and daoist magic, but it's not the focus. So don't read if that's a deal breaker for you. But do read if you love cats. The author is clearly a great observer of cats and that really shines through with the descriptions of Lady Calico's mannerisms and her laser focus on getting Song You to eat rats.

As far as the translation itself is concerned, trust that the translator wctan did a good job and has an excellent command of the English language. The novel at times is very poetic, and this is preserved in an understandable way, which I assume was very tough.

The novel also has some parts where it tries to be subtle, with small hints of foreshadowing in lots of chapters. If you're not paying attention you could miss them like I did where there were things practically spelled out in the first chapter that I didn't understand until dozens of chapters later... Possibly because I glossed over it, but from other novels on this site I've been trained that anything important will be spelled out much more directly and to not read too much into word choices since they might not realize every connotation of a word they used. Not so in this translation. If wctan used a word with subtle connotations, wctan meant all of them.

On a meta level, the way this novel is written and paced has made me wonder if it is meant to indirectly guide the reader in understanding the Dao and Daoist philosophy. I haven't found any other novels on here that have made me think that I was cultivating just by reading the novel. Bravo to the author Golden Jasmine Flower and wctan for that, too, as I think that shows how carefully this was written and how carefully it was translated.

this story is genuinely good for you. it's a healthy food for every ages, especially fellow Daoists who's tired of hustle and bustle of Xianxia, harem, and system novels, or simply on the edge of cultivation deviation and needed the respite.

this is honestly my very first SoL or so and i'd recommend this to anyone. it has enjoyments of life, little bit of mystery, familial love, cute shit, fights, and even the classic 'against the heavens' arc, just don't have expectations that this would filled with face slapping, young masters every ten steps, and conflict every half-a-step, no, it can't be further from the truth. this is pure and simple Slice of Life, you better treat it as such. the experience of MC's journey with
    ,
    , and
is, for me personally, as exciting, colorful, and rousing as anything.

while the story is amazing and i loved every moment of it, for some it may be a bit boring to read continuously until the end. you can always read something else simultaneously to pass those small arcs where MC just live mundane life without any notable events

6/5. i'd forgot the whole thing just so i can read it again for the first time

This novel is amazing, the characters are really well done. the dialogue between Lady Calico and Song You is especially well. Aside from the dialogue, the world building is decent. You Learn as the MC, Song You, learns as well. There is some good history aswell, but its not the main focus of the novel, so it doesn't feel like the world is being built as the story goes.

The biggest thing some will want to know is, how are the fights? to be honest, there isn't many really. The characters who are important realize their mistakes and accept punishment, or the power difference between Song You and them is so big that it ends quickly. And IMO, that's fine, action isnt the focus of this story, and its still really nice seeing our usually tame MC just completely overwhelm them. ( He is also incredibly talented in spells, like a spell that takes regular people ten years, he claims it took him 3 days to master. but its not like an op mc typa of talent, its barely brought up.)

The Story is slow for the most part, its usually just seeing the MC and his companions (usually only Lady Calico, but sometimes someone else, like Heroine Wu.) walking and seeing what they want to see on a whim. MC hears the capital is nice? He walks there. A rumor of an immortal on Mount Yuding? he walks there. and every time I love it.

TLDR; a slow series about a daoist doing daoist things. 5/5.

This book is for me, a hidden gem. It really reminds me of A Stay-at-home Dad's Restaurant In An Alternate World. Where that novel had me crying from laughter, this one has me smiling at Lady Calico.

This really is to me the first Slice of Life where an 'immortal' just goes to reconnect with the world on his journey.
