The preface written by the author:

Over the past few months, I have endured the pain life bestowed upon me, and my mind and body struggled through it.

Life is like a scale, with Reality resting on one end and the Inner Self on the other. For me, the side of Reality grew heavier and heavier, causing the scale to lose its balance, and thus, the pain arose.

People often forget why they set out in the first place, lost in the scenery by the roadside after traveling for too long.

That’s precisely it—in this pain, I felt waves of confusion.

Since the completion of my last book until now, during this period of rest, I’ve been trying hard to find direction, to find the reason I started writing in the first place.

That was five or six years ago. I had been reading novels for a while.

A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality was the first, followed by Blasphemy, Zhu Xian, Mad God, Beast Cultivation Chamber, Taming the Beast, The Legend of Shushan, Only I Am Immortal, and many more.

I read countless novels, but a knot of frustration accumulated in my heart. This was all because most of the protagonists I encountered were incredibly lucky, upright, and morally noble. The villains, on the other hand, were usually stupid, crazy, and hideous—their names sounded impressive, but they were paper tigers who, despite looking glamorous and mighty, withered the moment they met the protagonist.

So, I started thinking. I wanted to see a true Great Villain.

A villain who is independent, arrogant, dark, decisive in his killings, and never wavers. He never hides his evil and possesses absolutely no hypocritical kindness.

His image would be thoroughly sinister, radiating demonic aura and pervasive killing intent. His greatest skill would be trampling on rules and slaughtering the famous and righteous sects.

He stands alone, an enemy to the entire world, scattering terror among all living things. He is the grand master of the evil path, sometimes arrogant and domineering, sometimes treacherous and cunning, and sometimes cold and merciless. He stands proudly at the peak, despising the world, and all the heroes who challenge him meet a miserable end.

His methods are cruel. Perhaps he even plays with蛊 (Gu, or parasitic worms). In short, you’d know immediately he’s not a good person.

So, what should his name be… Super Demon Lord? Old Demon of Black Mountain? Venerable Green Robe? No, no, no.

After thinking, why not call him Gu Zhen Ren (Reverend Insanity)?

It just so happened that I needed to create an account at the time. Okay, so this ID was born.

Some TV dramas often play out like this: The Great Villain defeats the protagonist, missing only the final, fatal blow. Then the villain starts rambling, allowing the protagonist to secretly accumulate strength for one last fight, which always results in a comeback and total victory.

If the roles were reversed and the villain was on the losing side, it would be like this: The protagonist displays his power, and the villain is defeated and paralyzed on the ground. Facing the protagonist’s sword, the villain suddenly weeps bitterly, swearing to completely change his ways. The “kind-hearted” protagonist hesitates. At this moment, the villain attempts a desperate counterattack, which fails. The protagonist, “seeing everything clearly,” thoroughly suppresses the villain, and his heart hardens. He yells, “Vile, shameless, despicable!” and finally kills the villain.

There are also those villains who, every time they kidnap the protagonist’s friends and family, almost never successfully execute their threat. Even when they have a massive advantage, they are inexplicably defeated by the protagonist due to various unforeseen circumstances.

It was about six years ago that I created the ID “Gu Zhen Ren.” I had a wish in my heart to witness an evil Great Villain. He would have his own way of doing things, be intolerable to the world, run rampant at will, and disdain to explain himself. He would be decisive in his killings, never troubled by love, and would never waver even when facing a beautiful woman.

His terrible reputation would shock the four seas, making people change color at the mention of his name.

Those who understand him respect him, revere him, and love him. Those who hate him gnash their teeth, employing every method, yet only making him stronger.

He walks his own path, wrapped in loneliness. His cold eyes see through all hypocrisy.

He scoffs in contempt at criticism and denial. He sneers in silence at hollow praise and flattery.

He can endure loneliness; he even enjoys it…

He is either heading toward success or heading toward destruction.

He is a warrior. He walks alone in the darkness on his personal pilgrimage, hacking through thorns and thistles. Nothing can stop him. If gods block, he slays the gods; if buddhas block, he slays the buddhas!

This dream has always been buried deep in my heart. Over the years of writing, I’ve thought about putting pen to paper several times, but it never came to fruition.

I was a bit afraid, feeling my skill wasn’t up to par yet.

Just like that, so many years passed. I experienced many things, and compared to when I first started writing, much has changed.

The past feels a bit too unbearable to revisit. This dream was also hidden in the dust of time, gradually forgotten by me. Even when it occasionally came to mind, I felt I wasn’t adequately prepared and lacked the ability to write such a satisfying story.

However, these past few days, I stopped my constant forward movement and looked back. I suddenly understood the truth—life isn’t stir-frying. When you stir-fry, you usually prepare all the oil, salt, sauce, and vinegar beforehand before you start cooking.

Life doesn’t come prepared. Even if “everything is ready,” aren’t we still missing the crucial last piece?

Life is always rushed; many things happen suddenly with little to no preparation.

Fate is fickle, and no one can predict what tomorrow will bring.

Therefore, I made a decision. Against the backdrop of the coming “2012 apocalypse” prediction, I will write a new book.

The book will be called Gu Zhen Ren (Reverend Insanity).

No other title is more fitting.

This is the cause from six years ago, bearing its fruit in the present.

The identical name has no other meaning here; it’s not self-absorption or arrogance on my part—it’s purely an expression of fulfilling a dream.

I want to realize a dream I had, and I want to recapture that feeling of excitement from the past.

Therefore, this book will be vastly different from other books, and its style will deviate sharply from my previous works.

Because the protagonist of this book is a Great Villain who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals—super evil! And most of the villains in the book are often the “great, glorious, and correct” young heroes, geniuses, or members of reputable and honorable orthodox sects.

This book will feature plots like this: The protagonist defeats the “great, glorious, and correct,” and without any unnecessary rambling, instantly eliminates the opponent’s attempt at a comeback. He will also kidnap the “great, glorious, and correct” friends and family, forcing them to retreat.

And he will never be soft-hearted. No matter what his opponent is—even if he is powerful, he will fight; even if she is beautiful, he will kill without mistake.

That’s right, this book will involve killing female characters, beautiful ones even—a mass slaughter.

The kind of man who has his three legs (two physical, one figurative) go soft upon seeing a beautiful woman, or whose eyes turn red with desire, or who anticipates a romantic encounter—that’s not what this book aims to present.

I know this will disappoint many, but please understand: Is abandoning one’s principles the moment a beautiful woman appears still the demeanor of an unparalleled demon, an Evil Boss? That’s a simp.

In this book, I want to express the madness of a Great Villain Boss—his rebelliousness, his mercilessness, his willfulness, and his recklessness.

There’s no doubt this will be a controversial book. From the perspective of the Longkong crowd (a Chinese web novel forum), this is called having a “mismatched worldview” (san guan bu zheng).

Yes, I frankly admit here that this is a book with a mismatched worldview.

Reading is meant for pleasure and enjoyment.

This book is very evil. Proceed with caution.

Those who want to read it are naturally welcome.

To those who can’t bear it, who feel unhappy, who feel their outlook on life, values, or morals have been defiled—I respectfully see you off!

Reading is for fun, after all. If you’re genuinely not happy or not enjoying it, then don’t read it. Just switch to another book. There are tons of good books out there, and I might even recommend a few during the writing process.

The above is the preface and declaration for this book.
