Adam is no one special. He’s just an accountant standing in line at a bakery one early Saturday morning, because his craving for Jameson’s croissants finally broke him.

Unfortunately, fate has other plans for him, as the black cubes show up before he can get his pastries.

The cubes are the heralds and guides of the Trials of Defiance. They’ve decided that Adam, along with every other able-bodied human adult, is to become a Player in their game.

Humanity’s future is at stake and it’s all but inevitable that Adam is going to die.

After all, he’s no one special.

Despite it all, he overcomes the first Stage. He attains some measure of power and then discovers a way to kill the black cube following him around.

The only problem is that killing the cube takes him down with it.

Oh, and it also gives him the power to go back in time when he dies.

I've read a bit over 100 chapters of this on RR, so firstly, this isn't stubbed last I checked, so ya'll should read there if you can (no offence to Ranobes bow This site does noble work).

Secondly, this is a mostly good take on the concept of a roguelike time-loop; mechanically, his builds are pretty diverse between runs (Spoilers, off the top of my head, some of his builds have been
, etc.). All of them are hella distinct, there's rarely repeats, and each class feels fresh and interesting with its own mechanics, and one of the best parts of the novel is easily seeing how the new classes he plays with works. (I call them classes, but they're item-based builds, not skill-points or anything adjacent).

The world unfolding and Adam growing in knowledge and scope, trying new things and slowly perfecting each 'level' across runs is honestly a very, very solid writing loop. welldone Unfortunately, later chapters of longer 'runs' can feel a bit stagnant, since there's always the idea that he's going to reset, even if Adam himself doesn't view it like that; the concept of how the time-loop works here is very well-thought out to play into the story's narrative.

That aside, however, I do find characters and the actual writing here to just feel a bit stiff. It's passable, above the average, even, gramamar's great, but as someone who nitpicks, there's just times where characters don't hit as hard as they do, and Adam's mindset can be tough to bear on occasionally (in an intentional way, I imagine), even if he's a mostly good character besides his frustrating moments. The dialogue and character interactions just sometimes don't land for me, though the core of Adam's character (as not an unthinking, unfeeling monster, thank gosh) is compelling.

Overall though, I'd definitely recommend this as an interesting take on the tower-climbing time-loop shtick. Stick with it for at least the first couple of his runs for it to really hit the ground, but solid book overall, 7.8/10 personally. hokage

    Happy reading, fellow daoists. reader
