10/10 should read. The mc is good natured and hidden past kind of storyline.

Daoist Inkdrunkwanderer's Review — Black Badger

Honestly, this is one of those novels where almost everything just works.

The biggest highlight is the main character, Hildebert. He’s a refreshing change from typical fantasy MCs...clever, self-aware, and grounded. He’s kind, but not blindly so. If a situation demands it, he’s willing to be cruel...even to people he cares about. What makes him stand out is that, whenever there’s unavoidable harm, he’d rather take it on himself. Not because he’s heroic, but because he’s confident he can endure it.

And yet… he keeps doing it. Even when others worry. Even when it hurts. chad

The writing itself is incredibly strong. The author has a great grasp on emotional pacing...you can go from laughing to feeling completely crushed within the same chapter. The foreshadowing is also done extremely well. Things that seem insignificant early on come back hundreds of chapters later in ways that completely recontextualize the story. It’s the kind of novel that genuinely rewards rereading.

The cast is another major strength. Every character feels distinct, and even the antagonists are handled with nuance. No one feels purely “good” or “evil”.....you may not agree with them, but you can understand them. Supporting characters are also used effectively and don’t just disappear; the story constantly reminds you of their presence and their impact, sometimes in painful ways.

The pacing is fast and engaging. Events flow one after another, and just when things seem to settle, the author drops another major reveal...often tied to the protagonist’s past, which is slowly and carefully unraveled throughout the story. By the time everything connects, it feels earned. clap

The setting itself....humanity struggling against interdimensional threats....is interesting, but what really stands out is the mystery around Hildebert. He appears with no memories, already powerful, and you’re pulled in immediately trying to understand who he is and what happened to him.

There are a few minor issues. Some dialogue can feel repetitive at times, and the environment could use more descriptive detail. Also, the cover might give a misleading impression of the story’s tone.

And for those wondering....there’s no romance. None. But there is a noticeable amount of “bromance,” ranging from subtle to… very not subtle.

Overall, this is a gripping, emotionally impactful story with strong character work, excellent foreshadowing, and a compelling mystery at its core. If you’re looking for a morally gray protagonist and a story that can make you laugh and hit you emotionally in the same breath, this is absolutely worth reading.

      Growing towards peak.

Is it realistic? Settings extremely good by kr standard, however it's slow world building as befitting amnesiac MC...

Does it follow a method where every outcome has a cause?
The hooks of unknown causes are layered, typical hint kr style /translations, as in sometimes not clear if cultural context is missing or just not translated, however even beginner readers should have no issue because author doesn't break the consistency of narration.

Does it contain logical plans and conspiracies, or are they based on real life? That's not a good question. It's sci-fi, even super abilities and mysterious conspiracy plots are "logically" extended from real life as world is based in ours.

Is there psychological development in the characters? Absolutely. Amnesia is well done, mc is complex, even the social interactions deepen.
Some broken characters even grow through mc interactions.

Is it rich in characters with their own goals and principles? All from mostly MC POV however occasionally slips into limited God's eye view... hard to say as chapter can be rollercoaster, plot steady, only read up to 130ish translated. We do shown sociapths, hierarchies, friendships, antagonists all with rounded individuality and depth.

      Is the narrative good?

The story is smooth, plot unique enough, setting not jarring despite future/apocalyptic ww3 hints, and style emotionally engaging.
